Because "reading between the lines" is a way of giving your reason for not believing it. What's 'between the lines' is what's missing from the speech. He said things in a certain way - used ambiguous words, weasel-words, modifiers; hedged, avoided specifics - to give himself an escape hatch. (another metaphor)

    Agree

Giving wiggle room in a speech is a politician's, and others, speech requirement

But possibly the wiggle room can be debated

Don't give yourself wiggle room by using a metaphor

He's lying. Get called on it - give evidence examples

That's just it. If he has clever speech-writers, he's evading the issue, skirting the truth, withholding salient information, substituting slogans for facts - all the tricks of not-quite-telling the truth, but without provably lying. That's why you need to read between the lines.

masked metaphours made meak to mingle in midst of murderous mermerings malaisly melted moments merged mournful memories maliciously.

say this to the next person who complains about someone not reading between the lines.

... if it goes without saying, then it is past the point where words matter and violence is the only acceptable next option
[and video their face when you say it]

Words or violence - that's the only choice? I can think of several unscripted activities that do not result in grievous bodily harm...

i am compresing a fairly large debate.

all action = violence as it is forced action without consent.
consent is not possible when verbal requests and interaction has been deemed to be less value than what is NOT being said.

this is "The lie" of the situation and perpetuated by those who wish to hide behind lies by using implied violence towards others as "reading between the lines".

the implication of needing to know what is not being said, and... what 'not being said' being critical...
is directly resultant in effecting those who have not been asked or advised.
this = forced action = violence
if people are never asked they can never refuse, this requires that society accept that all people have agreed.
this is from WWII germany and the nazi movement & how it took control.
the ideology is the important part.
the mechanisms of that is part of unspoken laws and requirements.
forced action without consent with unspoken rules

i beleive a modern counter to such violence is the idea of transparent government, however that appears to have been hijacked by alt-right in an attempt to target the less fortunate.
it is still developing so it has not yet set its self into a negative frame of opresive counter culture as yet.

Here's another couple of words for ya: false dichotomy, hyperbole.

There's a weeeee bit of wiggle room between the extremes of words and violence.

i am also refering to current global facist bully-boy type normalisation.
rhetoric and doing one thing while saying another(and the dog whistle politics and political extremist normalisation of national political ideologies), refugees etc. all the pushyness that seems to have all these ideological & moral conflicts happening while nothing is said and other things are done etc...

i think global politics is on a tipping point, a knife edge.
we are seeing many governments resorting to cold war type behaviours. (im not going to list all the nasty stuff you can read in the news media).

i assume that the usa, uk europe & russia do not wish to have wwII type nazis running their countrys
so why do we seem to see many blank spaces in their dance cards where they have just left the door open instead of slamming it shut ?
that is one big example of allowing unspoken meanings between the lines continue to gain normalisation it seems to be normalising extremist political positions.
that is one thing that is bugging me.
but i try not to think about it.
it appears to be a philisophical cultural discussion in progress in many countrys.

maybe the death camps need to be modernised with media tech with movie screens and interactive sounds and smells and start putting school groups through them to remind people which direction the 1st world nations are supposed to be going in.
