But not necessarily spherical shells, which is the only thing the shell theorem applies to.

Fringe questions: The shell theorem has been evoked again in a new thread having possibly to do with the "halo" question of the OP. namely : "The Dual Nature of Gravity".
The halo effect on orbital velocities is clearly present. The halo described as being made up, of the possibly "made up" Dark Matter.
The "Dual Nature of Gravity" posting asserts, that shrinking shells, globes, will leave behind, in place, their original gravitational fields, It might be these that mimic the presence of substance, DM, the real matter that is not there any more, that has moved inward.
New, stronger gravity (more potential future DM, halo effect) is created in the newly opened space outside the smaller emerging shell outer surface, the fringe.

Velocity Dependence from Resonant Self-Interacting Dark Matter. Physical Review Letters, 2019; 122 (7) DOI:Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe. "Dark matter may be hitting the right note in small galaxies." ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 27 February 2019. <www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/02/190227092327.htm>.
Interesting information here, on supposed dark matter properties, that get ever more convoluted, DM having orbital velocities, rotating revolving, but having resonance, DM particle bouncing of each other.
Yes, because diffuse objects do not have distinct surfaces.

indeed it is, but going directly to Science Daily, and then put in search "lost light" will get you the article, worked for me just now, thank you.

An interesting conclusion about the total Gravity force or spacetime tensioning has emerged on the "more gravity inside or out" theme.
It is shown, that the product of the local gravity force multiplied by the area of the shell hosting the force, which is highes at the "surface" remains constant to infinity.
With DM so dependant on g, what does that show?
