From what I read tapir mothers can be unpredictable and aggressive when looking after their babies. You have to be careful around any wild animal, in the wild or in captivity, because when they loose their fear of humans they can do a human serious, if not fatal, damage. I am surprised the zoo let a two year old girl near a mother tapir with her babies. I hope something like that never happens again.

I found it interesting in the article that deer and zebras are two of the most dangerous animals when kept in captivity. I would think carnivores like bears or lions would be more dangerous in captivity than deer or zebras.

Ironically, pontificating is often the opposite of bridge-building. More like Trumpificating.

while people think they are cute & majestic, their hooves have hard fairly sharp edges and with the massive speed & around 150 to 250 kilos of weight they can deliver, the hoof can cut straight to the bone of a human, break fingers toes & arms.
a charge and direct hit with antlers from a buck will be almost guaranteed fatal if hitting the head of a human and break arms & legs like match sticks.

most likely danger is they run you down as they try and escape.
running over the top of you cutting with front hooves as they run and climb

for children (being small) they are more likely to walk up to and stomp them with a sharp hoof cutting flesh like a knife and bursting organs
maybe a couple of hoof stomps then crushing with their head against the ground until they feel better

sheep are very much the same

I wonder why? Could it be that they are the most hunted species by predators and if they were not able to defend themselves they'd be extinct by now? Like many other species less able to defend themselves?

from what i have been told by park ranger type folk they can quietly move about inside wooded places and disappear from view within only a few meters.
200kg 4 legged animal that can walk silently in densely wooded places.
ive watched a video of a bear running down a deer over about 4 kilometers.
the bear could not go as fast as the deer but it had the stamina to catch up with it once the deer had tired.
(probably not a very wholesome family topic, but that's carnivores)
[can't recal the source, maybe national geographic and/or one of their affiliates, found a clip of the video]

Yes, nature is cruel, but fair. The bear earned his catch, unlike that guy with a cannon, who drives up to the fence and from 50 yards or less goes for the kill of a buffalo standing in a pasture, so he can mount the head on a wall plaque.
    Bah....

muggle - a person who isn't conversant with an activity or skill

Or, if you're into Harry Potter - ''someone who isn't very magical''

We might all be muggles, then.
