Couple nights ago, I got up to urinate and, as I passed through the bathroom door, I walked through a spider web...........the following morning, I looked at her. This morning I took her picture. I ain't never seen another like her.

    Common house spider.

There's hundreds of similar spiders. You could Google all day to find a species match.

    She is amazingly patient
and, it seems, accustomed to me. As I pass her on my way in and out, she does not move

No doubt she's been watching you longer than you've been watching her.

If you live in Australia, that pic you've posted would be the actual size of the spider.

I thought spiders had poor vision and depended on feeling vibrations?
My beloved spouse thinks she is a lycosidae(wolf spider), but all the ones I;ve seen in this place, Iowa, have different webs.
    anyway
here is a picture of her belly

Upon closer inspection, her web skills seem to need improvement?

Nope. Many spiders have excellent vision. Many hunt by sight - especially those that don't make webs.

Different species make different webs. Only some webs are the classic disc we usually see.

Its a garden orb weaver... an a way to help verify... try to touch its head... an if its a orb weaver it will likely bite

The same thing happened to me about six-months ago: I walked into the bathroom in the night and through a web. The difference was this Spider crawled across my spine and onto my side. It wasn't that big: it didn't bother me. It still finished it's life in the toilet though. Then there was another one in the bathroom with a large green blob by it's mouth. I couldn't tell if it was something it was/had eating/eaten. Dead!

Spiders, it seems, kill and eat the bugs that I find more annoying so. I like 'em.
That being said: Walking into a spider web in the dark in the middle of the night ain't nowhere near my list of favorite things.

I agree. I prefer Spiders to the bugs they eat (providing they are not too large.)

I was sitting at my work bench the other night, the window was open next to me as it was a warmish night, and I have the heavy duty protective/security screens on all our windows and doors, so they are fairly heavy steel fine mesh..

I was doing some work and I heard something running across the screen and the screen actually vibrated.

I spun around, thinking it's a possum or something.

It was a very, very large huntsman spider, moving across the outside of the screen, right by my table and most importantly.. ME!!

Here is a picture of a huntsman carrying a mouse:

The one I saw was actually bigger than that.

My kids were watching TV in the same large work/play space we have upstairs and they just saw me doing this incoherent screaming, and running around closing all the windows.

They still look at me and chuckle about it.

Yes! We get them inside quite a bit. Mostly in the summer.

Sometimes I will be in the car and one will scuttle up in line of sight.. Has happened to me more times than I care to think about without crying. I will stop the car and get out, usually with some keening noises and a few times, loud screaming. And at least one time, my scrambling across the middle console, as it crawled up the driver door next to my leg.

I did discover during one unfortunate bathroom incident, when one was between me (I had, to my shame, jumped into the bath and was screaming, forgetting I was alone in the house) and the door, that hairspray slows them down (they are ridiculously fast).

And sucking them up with the vacuum cleaner does not work as it does not kill them and they can crawl back out again, and they can survive for days on end.

I do not splat them.. ever.. now my kids get a broom and try to steer them back outside, while I cower like a coward. And also because they sometimes have their babies on their backs and if you try to splat them, all the babies jump off (horrifying)..

    I’m cringing reading this.

I can’t imagine! I find large insects in general to be jarring, startling ...but, spiders have always terrified me. A friend of mine said that he thinks this is evolution at work - that since we don’t have to kill animals in the wild that were twice our size for food and clothing like our caveman ancestors, we find it hard to adapt to large insects in our homes. I guess he means that if you had to kill a wooly mammoth, a spider wouldn’t phase you. Lol!

Hmm, I don’t know about that “theory.”

You know what's funny? If I saw a giant butterfly or lady bug the size of that spider above, would I be afraid? Probably not, because for some reason, I accept lady bugs and butterflies as being friendly, lovely creatures. Spiders never seem friendly.
