What is ''happy hour'' at a bar supposed to mean, anyway? That we're to be happy, for just one hour?

    Alcohol doesn't make me......happy. Hmm.

    inquiring minds wanna know!

Half-price drinks, I think. Normally it is early in the evening, to try to get people in who might not otherwise come. It may be an American thing. We don't see it in the UK much. I think it has been decided it leads to excessive drinking and antisocial behaviour.

I think it can lead to dui's of course, unless you get an uber.

But, many people don't get ubers, interestingly. DUI's are still high, in the states.

I do like a glass of wine or two...but happy hours don't interest me all that much. I'd rather invite friends over, turn up the music, and make a party of our own.

What is DUI? Driving under the influence? That is a very American conclusion to draw. In British cities we tend to use public transport - or walk to the pub - if we are going drinking. However, now that I have to watch my consumption, due to a heart arrhythmia, I am probably under the limit at the end of the evening anyway, more's the pity. Age is a terrible thing.

DUI's = driving under the influence, yes....but if one lives in the city, we do as you do...walk to the bar, etc. I go to bars but getting an Uber, etc is the wise choice.

There's also public transportation here as well, depending on where one lives.

But, my point is...people still drive under the influence or drunk...and it amazes me with how strict the laws are in the states.

I’m being a bit facetious lol A glass of wine or two can be fun, but just the phrase “happy hour,” struck me as funny earlier.

You must go to the "better pubs" then, if you go at all. In Rhyl we get happy hours all the time, not as much as they used to, but almost every pub still does them. It's generally on Fridays or Saturdays instead of everyday now though. It's also when most of the fighting happens, so it's more like entertainment hour really.

I don't. But I can see why people who hadn't been there might think.

The sooner you get away, the sooner you get in bed with the bird you pulled presumably. I've never had a happy hour.

Uber have ripped me off so many times(I now use a different firm) that I'm surprised the haven't been done for fraud.

so much so specifically to young drinkers that it has been tightly regulated in conjunction with police advice to help prevent sudden binge drinking where young inexperienced drinkers may drink themselves unconscious.

HappyHour now only truly exists in pubs with regular patrons where they are all known by name by the owner and staff.
it is more of a gesture of gifting to the regulars.
the owner shouts out happy hour next 30 minutes or so and the patrons can come up and buy a cocktail which they would otherwise never buy because of the price, at half price.

it cant be done in student pubs because they destroy the bar and then complain they never got served while they were waiting in line.
then the students will see they are being ripped off and manipulated by the owner and simply boycott the pub and it will go out of business in a few months.
    seen it happen several times.

discounted drinking for university students is a tricky tactical game.
if they do it right they get a bit more business
if they get it wrong they get prosecuted by the police and the students boycott and/or protest picket the pub... and they loose the business(franchise) or get sacked and have their license taken away.

Oh you're in Rhyl, are you? I think some of the people I used to know at Shell (Stanlow refinery, and the research centre, near Chester) lived there - or nearby. But I have never visited it myself.

I'm in London. I think maybe the mayor has agreed with most of them to stop, due to the "speed drinking" it led to. But Iam not sure exactly.
