But then he would be a maximalist, on the beard front.

In my case, it was helpful that I lived 3,000 miles away. It limited my options and therefore my decisions.

It's a natural offshoot of minimalism.

YesI can imagine. In my case it was 40 minutes drive away and my father was and is still alive, in a nursing home, throughout the process. So it was an exercise in diplomacy as well as practicality. My bros took a lot of furniture and pictures, by degrees. But I have to keep a record of who got what as when my father dies we need to get it all valued, for inheritance tax. Stuff can be a pain......

The main pain is "sentimental value". I've seen families (not mine, I am an only child) pay lawyers far more than the value of the stuff that is being argued over.

I like shopping, especially for things I don’t really need. Idk why but I think it could have to do with confusing wants with needs? Maybe that’s it.

What did you do with your books?

You don't have to only buy things you need. If that were the case food and clothes would be all we bought. It's OK to buy what you want as well.

I think the question should be does it make you happy, do you use it. If it's just a habit that you later feel bad about then it's not making you happier.

I like buying (among other things) art supplied. I have more than I "need" at any one moment but when it starts to feel as if I'll never use them all or when it's starting to take up too much room...I stop.

Yes, that’s exactly it. I find that I’m a bit too impulsive and then a week later, I’m like meh, why did I buy that? Clothes with the tags still on, or shoes that seemed like a good idea when I bought them. Lol

I’ve learned a good tip - if you want to buy something, wait 21 days before purchasing it and if you still REALLY want to buy it, then you will likely use it. It’s hard but it works.

I’ve not bought a few things recently using that idea.

What is worse (or funny at least) is when you buy something that you realize that you already have.

Lol True. I’ve done this with nail polish, buying duplicate colors by mistake. But...you can never have too many nail polish colors.

You might not be able to have too many nail polish colors but I can. If I had one more bottle than I have guitar colors I'd get funny looks I think.

    Very Middle Eastern.
    Reminds me of a joke:-
Q: how can you tell when a Jewish woman is having a real orgasm.
A: She stops polishing her nails.

In my case it was a matter of getting the brothers to take the stuff. The books were a psychological wrench, because both my parents were bookish people and one felt there were two lifetimes of learning being thrown away. But most books have no value to others. I filled55 boxes (2ft cubes, so they could be carried) and gave them to a charity, because that way somebody came to collect them, at least.
There were novels, art books, poetry and plays, history, classical literature, theology, philosophy..........it seemed such a shame, but there was nothing useful to be done with them.

The only acceptable nail polish colour is red.

Golly, doesn’t that make it look as if you’ve hit your fingers with a hammer?
