There is a term used to cover sexual preferences which differ from 'straight'. It is abbreviated as LGBTQ, where Q stands for queer. What distinguishes queer from the other preferences?

It's more of a blanket term, including non-cis-gender and non-heterosexual, and people who just don't know (which is why it's sometimes referred to as "questioning.") Thus LGBTQ is somewhat redundant, although LGBT does not cover non-binary people (whereas queer/questioning does.)

But even that's old. It's since expanded to LGBTQIAPK, for lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/intersex/asexual/pansexual/kink. IMO that's sort of overloaded the term. Most people know what you mean by LGBT.

Echoing billvon's understanding. I think queer is an overarching, more generic term for gay/lesbian.

BTW, wiki has an extensive article on it.

Same thing happened to STEM, which is a term intended to steer kids into science/technology/engineering/math, areas where the US is currently under-represented (especially for women.) Then they wanted to expand it into STEAM, which adds "arts." Arts are great but aren't really part of STEM. It seems like it got added just to be 'more inclusive' and some art folks wanted to hitch a ride.

But art is not the point of STEM. What's next? Adding history, English, debate and sports so you can have "SHTEEMDS?"

Hey! That's a good idea. Let's nobody label or categorize anybody by gender/ sexual orientation/preference! Won't that be a nicer world?

You missed out being categorised by "Personally challenged reaction to visible light spectrum by not reflecting" (old speak Black)
    or
"Privileged visible light spectrum reflectability" (old speak White)

    This is microaggression.

It costs you nothing for other people to vie for their rights and be recognized. Why do you hold it against them?

Generally that is preceded by the haters who are not satisfied until each group is denigrated the way they like, with labels like "nigger" "fag" "pedophiles" "thugs" etc.

Probably because it has been taken past the point of seriousness.

Is that generally the way it works? That's good to know.

    Exactly

The PC brigade not only require that "they" want to be considered as a particular group of ONE but that their group of ONE (themselves being the only member) simply by their being the only self declared member of the group, hence unique, this uniqueness entitles them to special treatment and why are you not giving me my special treatment?

Nope. They just want the SAME treatment - which for centuries was denied them. Even today those rights are removed whenever politicians can manage it.

For many people (white straight cis male Protestants mostly) it's not losing rights they fear - it's losing their privilege over other people. They want to be the norm, the standard, the one everyone else is compared to. When a cop runs into a room, they want to be seen as the victim, not the criminal. When an investigation starts into child abuse, they want all the attention focused on the gay teacher, not on them. When they apply for a mortgage, they want preferential treatment over the "freaks."

It's kind of like displaying each flag of the 13 provinces/territories of Canada and then placing the Canadian flag itself at the end of them (a symbol which more efficiently subsumes all of them). Maybe that wouldn't be so bad if it stopped there, or even proper. But... more stuff keeps being added on after the Canadian flag. (Flags of specific cities? The photos of Canadian prime ministers?).

That's why the "Q" should either be settled as representing "questioning" (which at least arguably introduces "something different") or else keep moving Q as "queer" to the end of the rainbow alphabet as the latter adds new members and challenges to overtake the conventional, 26 letter sequence in quantity.

I think the term robs the person from all positive character traits. If one considers the original definitions of the term, it is the pinnacle of personal insult.

    Oxford English Dictionary;

    queer, adjective

    1. strange; odd.
"she had a queer feeling that they were being watched"

Similar: unusual, funny, peculiar, curious, bizarre, weird, outlandish, eccentric, unconventional, unorthodox, uncanny, unexpected, unfamiliar, abnormal, anomalous, atypical, untypical, different, out of the ordinary, out of the way, extraordinary, remarkable, puzzling, mystifying, mysterious, perplexing, baffling, unaccountable, incongruous, uncommon, irregular, outré, offbeat, singular, deviant, aberrant, freak, freakish, suspicious, dubious, questionable, eerie, unnatural, unco, fishy, creepy, spooky, freaky, rum, off the wall, bizarro, suspect, doubtful, murky, dark, criminal, dishonest, corrupt, nefarious, crafty, deceitful, shifty, underhand, dishonorable, unscrupulous, unprincipled, fraudulent, illegal, unlawful, shady, bent.

    Opposite
    : ordinary, conventional, normal

Instead of separating the term and give it a "special" definition for LGBT, any use of the term to identify LGBT individuals, should be stricken from the dictionary altogether.

The term should only be used for deserving individuals.

    Trump is "queer".....!
