China's 'dark' fishing fleets are plundering the world's oceans
    By Sean Mantesso

Posted 5hhours ago, updated 5hhours ago

When a vast Chinese armada appeared outside the Galapagos Marine Reserve in South America earlier this year, Ecuador's Government sounded the alarm.

They called in the big guns, asking the United States Coast Guard to help keep an eye on the enormous number of fishing vessels.

The sheer size of the fleet fuelled Ecuador's urgency: more than 350 Chinese fishing boats were detected, outnumbering its own navy and those of Peru and Chile combined.

Lieutenant-Commander Christa Caldwell of the US Coast Guard, which sent a vessel down to the region to provide surveillance on the fleet, said the magnitude of fishing activity was unprecedented.

The flotilla was plundering waters that are among the most biodiverse in the world: the Galapagos Marine Reserveis home to the greatest biomass of sharks on the planet.

Satellite tracking data showed the boats forming a near-perfect line along the boundary of Ecuador's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) — however the US Coast guard did not detect any of the Chinese boats cross over into Ecuadorian waters.

"The issue is that fish don't know borders," Lieutenant-Commander Caldwell told the ABC.

Fishing in international waters is not illegal, even if those waters sit right beside areas of great ecological importance.

This "China" issue is pretty relevant to Australia, as China has for a few months now been conducting a bullying campaign against our exports [China being our biggest market] with bans on Wine, Lobster, and many other things.

This started over our [Australia's ] push for an independant investigation into corona virus and China's part in this and the resultant Pandemic.
They also depend on our mineral resources and [somehow] lease huge areas of WA and the Pilbara, for some of these resources, sadly under Labor governments.

Over reaction or something to be deeply concerned about?

One could ask why we made such a push ....I doubt our feeble minded lot thought it up for themselves and bet it was due to prompting from someone concerned about losing their influence in the region and perhaps happy to see a reduction in trade between us and China.

China's response was entirely predictable and perhaps the strength of their response reflects their disappointment that Australia perhaps was doing another's bidding. Maybe it's their way of saying they are disappointed in the way we show our gratitude.

I expect no other country raised the idea of an investigation because they simply had the sense not to...at that level one must recognise it would be taken as a grave insult..as it was and to expect relations to sour..as they have. Our politicians should know better but driven by ego they rush to destroy trade ...and now call China a bully with no recognition why China is pissed off..that is so dumb.

The thing to be deeply concerned about is the enormous amount of negative propaganda coming out of the USA against China...I saw one rat bag YouTube channel say...Australia will take care of invading certain Islands in any coming conflict...why present such bullshit but the propaganda is alarming...

Now China has been having a terrible time with flooding and I have not seen any extension of compassion at all ...and has the media made much of it other than constantly saying with glee the three gorges dam will bust.

Bagging China suits a certain mob in the USA because they play on the fear of communism and then link Biden to China but we are suffering fall out..and who do you think will pick up the contracts for what we lose...just follow that aspect and that will convince you who is sharfting us.

Agree whole heartedly on that score Alex, it's just pathetic that they have used trade as a means of a tit for tat...and a tit for tat, that is probably doing China and its multitudes, more harm then to our farming industry.

Having gone to a Catholic school the "yellow peril" was rammed down our throats, along with the domino theory.

I think if you look at what they are experiencing their approach is really not pathetic..think of it this way..you go to a particular shop and are a good customer as you spend your money there..then the shop owner turns around and treats you badly I do think your response will be to withdraw your custom.
The Trump mob are playing on the fear of communism, the loss of jobs..China is just one scape goat here but not spoken about in a reasonable light, and then trying to tie Biden up with the terrible China...further China is understandably building a blue water navy which is not going down well at all with US as they see it as stepping into their region of control.
There are various things going on more than I understand no doubt but I simply warn against being carried away bagging China given the politics in US ..I am not sure but I think US picked up the contracts for barley supply that we lost....I need to confirm that ..do you know?
In any event things won't get better if we spend our time finding reasons to hate China all the while failing to recognise they are after all good customers of our little shop...
China has traditionally been isolationist and never seem to want anything more than trade and don't expect us to embrace their culture ...

China does appear to be spreading its wings somewhat Alex...evidenced of course with your "NAVY" comment.
Some good that does appear to have come out of this, is Australia's hand being forced in giving proper aid and help to our South Pacific neighbours, in lieu of China's growing influence in that region.
    That is a good thing!

Interesting Alex, to say the least.
The two points again that trouble me with China, is their huge fishing fleets outside of the Galapagos Marine Reserve, which is a total disregard of fishing quota etc particularly in that part of the world. Having been to the Galapagos, I see the neccesity of keeping it as it is and as pristine as it is, although that now in this day and age is questionable.
ScoMo also imo was acting under Trump's advice but thankfuly he'll be gone in a short time, and Biden may have some different plans.
Saw a real disturbing piece today from one of the ADF's top Generals, predicting that the USA and China will be in a full scale war within 5 years.
    Now that is scary!!
