If you were a Greenlander, would you want to establish one or more rare earth mines on your land?

I don't think so..by the time they cost in a realistic clean up and ground water safety figure, it probably wouldn't be profitable to do so. (as China is apparently finding out)
example of REM in the USA.

    not a pretty sight eh?

so far, proposals for developing 2 sites have been presented

Oh I see. Can you provide a link with a few details?

Yep. If I did it I could do it more cleanly than current mines, and Greenland is getting more land to mine all the time as their glaciers melt.

    oops
I read the information, then lost the links.
It seems that the Chinese company has the funding to get started but wants to use Greenland as a source for raw(partially refined) materials to be processed in China or Vietnam?

It seems that the site was first looked at for the uranium.

Do you assume that it would be done---cleaner?

    You are aways doing this.

It does make it harder to see the point in responding, as we can't both be sure we are talking about the same piece of information.

As long as it doesn't spoil the enjoyment of the territory for the population of c.60,000 I'd have no problem with any number of mines. It's otherwise just wasted land. Given that the territory is something like the 13th largest in the world by land area, with the population size of 60,000 it is the least densely populated in the world. If the mine is an eyesore then who is going to complain? Sure, if they build it right next to a population centre, then I'd say no, but if that's not the case then go for it, say I.

    ok
the people of nearest village to the proposed kvanefjeld mine, about 3 miles away are largely opposed to the mine. Meanwhile the government in Nuuk seems to be looking at the imagined economic benefits of the mining.
here is a copy of a petition in opposition to developing the mine:

"The hearing of the Kuannersuit(kvanefjeld) mining project in South Greenland is currently in effect.

This is a mining project that will be extracting rare earth materials including uranium and thorium.

A report states that this mining project's electricity is lead by diesel, meaning that the Co2 emissions of Greenland will be increased by 45%.

On top of this, the lives of the local sheep farms that are all within a 26 mile/41km radius will be endangered if any problems should occur in the mining project.

This mining project is only a 40 minute walk away from the population of Narsaq.

The population of Greenland has been trying to fight the initiation of the mine for years in fear of the toxic waste polluting the nature, animals and population of South Greenland and the government is not listening to what they have to say, completely ignoring the democracy of Greenland."

They seem to not believe that the mine will be without negative environmental impacts.

    ........................
Bear in mind that though Greenland is large, the habitable area is small.

    That is exactly the point

I do not have all of the information that I would like
    so
we come at it from different perspectives, and perhaps, different knowledge
    which
makes for a more thorough and varied and worthwhile interchange.

    ........................................
Nuuk is 459km away from the mine site in a country with no roads
    So
Does Nuuk want what Narsaq wants?

I assume that it could be done cleaner
I'm not certain that it will be done cleaner

Of course. You asked if I were a Greenlander would I do it. If it were me I would be sure it would be done as cleanly as possible.

Elon Musk has recently secured some for making batteries

Rare earth is required to make all the solar panels & electric cars & electric scooters & electric bikes
& computers & new emergent technologies

the previous usa administration alienated all its global allies and now have no access to rare earths

Rare Earth values will skyrocket depending on what ability speculators have to attack the market
but generally speaking rare earth values should easily double in price over the next year with little effort
unless the price is being deliberately held down by companys who own the buyer & mining companys.
they will be exploiting the value increase to inflate prices to the factories instead of sharing the value increase, they will be stealing & scamming it as a wrought.

Greenland has the opportunity to make a lot of money as long as it secures its own resources and doesn't sell them cheaply

USA open cast mining & mining in general is deliberately very bad
they deliberately pollute the environment to leverage profit write downs and costings to financially control local authority
they politacise this to whip up anti regulation voter support in governors senators the house & in workers.

    its all very dishonest
no different to open bribery or the Russian black market back in the cold war iron curtain days

    same/same

china is a little different to some other countrys
they have a more feudal approach to capitalism
they expect a high degree of risk to be normal inside some models of working functions
they lose hundreds of workers every year to coal mining on the job deaths
imagine what level of disease deaths they must have.

    thousands

    however
though the cultures are vastly different usa/china
they are intertwined in business relationships to service a single goal
    making profit
china appear to be a little bit better at capitalism than the usa
    possibly because of their culture
american blind greed is short sighted which is what we now see with the trade war with the majority of american consumer items being made in china
with a terrible relationship and very poor cultural understanding at an official or general public level.

there is open hostility of racial nature from alt-right americans towards china in general
when they buy all their life style items off Chinese and have sent all their manufacturing jobs to china.

china has won, they have just not picked up the prize basket yet.

dirty bad mining practices that are designed(& created deliberately) to make clean mining look un-affordable, do so to exploit bottom rung consumer money directly into top tear investor profit with no tax

Rare Earths is the awkward golden egg laying child in the new future family

mining companys & corrupt government officials do not want it done cleaner
because that means more regulations and accountability for spills & accidents & clean up regulations

    so its all around profit
    less regulation = more profit

    it's very simple

    apart from one aspect
which is not overtly simple when it comes to how it is being scammed to scam others

how do they scam greenland ?

THAT is the game being played
they(mining companys & rare earth speculators) want no regulation but some token regulation to sell to the media
they want to just get the product without being accountable for mining or workers
    or environment
and they want to drive down the price as hard as possible

they also want to undermine the Greenland people to demoralize them and make them feel like hopeless victims on the edge of a cliff
so they can force them to sell at low prices

the reality is Greenland is in a powerful global position
    EXTREMELY powerful

so the evil people will target them to undermine that power to turn it into profit

    Remember
    ~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~

Greenland people have a solid mixed market universal healthcare and universal economic system with free market regulation

its like the best ever possible version of what America has wet dreams about
but greed & evil undermine the American model to prevent it from developing a true mixed market system
    so they are envious
and so they want to smash it
that is why the next thing we will probably see is a disinformation war against
Greenland undermining their economic systems and culture
    probably from Americans

Isn't this a similar issue facing the Antarctic (South Polar region)?
