Our knowledge is based on the shaky foundation that the media provides for us. They show us what THEY think we need to be shown. They shape our opinions with pictures filtered through their ideas of how we should react. The media interprets for us the events that occur beyond our field of vision and knowledge. Free thought is portrayed as radical and dangerous. Serious faces behind microphones in far away lands are somehow endowed with a superior recognition and understanding of events captured and spoonfed to us. We know nothing that is not conveyed to us from the mysterious medium that bathes our faces in a flickering pale blue light. We are, in fact, completely dependant upon information tailored for us by those who provide only what information we will pay to hear. It would seem we are incapable of making the subtle connections that tie seemingly unrelated events together. We are not given facts. We are given scenarios that sponsers will pay to have broadcast to us. Seeing is believing. We see what the media chooses to show us. The media shows us great skyscapers tumbling to the ground. They show us the evil of striking civilian targets. (And it IS evil and I do not intend to try to subdue the hideous actions of evil, cowardly men) The media outlines the "unprecedented" trajedy of 5000 lost lives. The media shows how incapable Americans are of similarily attacking civilian targets. The media portrays an innately pure and civilized America. The media does not portray nuclear bombs being detonated over not one but two cities in Japan. The media does not show the immolated bodies of 250,000 Japanese civilians that include woman and children. The media neatly sutures the guilt of flattening two entire cities. The guilt of transforming children to smoldering mounds of blackened flesh as their arms still, in death, reach towards their screaming, horrified mothers. Hell, they deserved it. They attacked a military target in Hawaii causing the death of less than 3000 men who fully understood the nature and risk of their jobs. The media shows us a caring government dedicated to creating a better life for its citizens. The media fails to mention that the government is a facade that mask the fact we are living in a corporate oligarchy. It fails to alert us of the degradation of our personal liberties as we are lulled into believing that the past was occupied by people who were not threatened by the same dangers we face today. My heart goes out to the victims of the NYC trajedy. Yes, there are real palpable dangers out there that need to be dealt with. But please, do not believe everything that is fed to you through the intraveinous workings of the corporate(yes, corporate) media. So we have nuclear bombs and striped toothpaste, that does not mean the world has fundamentally changed since the gap between the haves and have nots was instituted by those who have controlled information since the written word was invented. |
