I don't have a problem with it. I think it exposed me to way more musicians than I would have otherwise known about. Before the internet, we were held hostage by the larger record labels.

I've done it - who hasn't? I have chosen not to do it any more because it bothers me, but I support others' making the choice for themselves.

who i choose to distribute music to is MY choice. it is not the choice of some corporation to decide what i do with my own property...now i know i havent addressed the issue of taking music i didnt buy, but i plead the 5th amendment on that.

I do it way too often and the funny thing is that I don't see it as doing anything wrong. But I know that thinking that is itself wrong.

What I'm trying to say is that I will download music until the cows come home but I don't see it as a crime (probably because I've done it a lot so it's more or less second nature). But the fact that I see it that way disturbs me slightly.

If the artist in question has stated that he/she didn't care, I will do it without any guilt. Otherwise I won't, just because it bugs me. Even if the RIAA backed off I'd still probably not do it.

An exception is material that I once bought on vinyl many years ago. I feel that I have already paid the artist for the song. I have no qualms about downloading it.

I'm with spidergoat, thanks to filesharing I've come to know music I never imagined existed.

I've talked with quite a few artists online and most of them have no problem with filesharing, some even share their and music by others on p2p networks.
Many of the artists I'm talking about usually release a few hundred hand numbered cd's
and are very happy to hear from a new fan by whatever means he has managed to get to their music.

To people to whoom art is important, money has a lesser value. They want to get their message through.

And it's not that they are not getting any. I've frequently spent all my remaining money on cd's that I've ordered from internet distributors and artist homepages.
90% of them I came to know through the internet.

And some music is so rare that it can't be bought anywhere at all, no matter how much you would like to pay for it. You can only sometimes be lucky and find it on some file sharing network or through friends and friends of friends who collect little known gems.

I've recently started using limewire. Is that considered piracy in the great ole u.s.a.?

Depends on what you are downloading.
If it's songs with copyrights that disallow unlicensed distribution, then yes.

p.s. Piracy is such a loud word, and theft is so legally incorrect,
    it's called copyright infringement.

My downloading music for free has resulted in money being spent on actual CD's. For instance, I found a song by this musician Sixto Rodriguez, and liked it so much I sent for his CD from South Africa. Many music blogs put up sample songs for a limited period, and I think this is respectful of the artists.

if I hadn't downloaded I would have never gotten into music nor would I have bought tickets for various concerts. As well, I buy some CD's occasionally of bands I like for the bonus features and stuff.

If CD's were abbolished then security could be improved. Every file could have an (almost)uncopiable licence installed in the player

sony has started encrypting cd's so that they can only be copied a certain number of times. have any other media companies done this? im not sure, sony is the only one i have heard of so far.

I'm not too worried about this, because I don't listen to mainstream music.
