Disregarding physical differences do you really think men and women are so different? I think we're equal with the exception of what the media and our society has made us believe. That and mental difference based on the physical.

    Cactus Jack ...

Different function, therefore different construct ... Both physically
    and mentally.

Unfortunately, thanks to our current worship of PC, the obvious
    is ignored.

Oh well, the madness of it all.

    Take care

    *In best 'Charlton Heston' voice*

    It's a mad house! A maaaaad house!

    Sorry.

    Gender differences in the brain:

Corpus collusum - colosam - coloasum - whatever!
    http://talentdevelop.com/gender.html

    http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/heshe.html

    Hemispheric:

    http://www.cjsm.com/Vol1/tbush1.html

Of course all brains are different, as all people are different. It would be foolish to apply stereotypes across the board, but there do appear to be differences in the way men and women think.

    Oooo! Inadvertent double entendre.

Yeah but couldn't the differences be there because we've been told all our lives that there are differences? The media teaches us how to act.

You mean, the brain is shaped by that conditioning? That's probably part of it.

I can't find any studies on gender differences at birth, but consider:

1: The mother-nurterer/father-fighter roles are fairly prevalent across cultures
2: Such roles seem to go back as far as we can trace humans.
3: Such roles could be cultral, but why? If brain structure had nothing to do with it, would we not expect more female warrior-hunter types throughout history? Can physical differences alone explain this?

Be interesting to study infant's brains for sex differences.

Yeah there's validity in that for certain, but I meant that most of it is because of media influence. Women don't grow their hair long and wear dresses because of some need it's our society. Women many times are pictured as frail and intelligent. Men Boisterous and ignorant. There's no real point to these stereotypes except they've been perpetuated by our media.

In original human tribes, the original positions were directly reflective of the size of the person. Therefore, men were hunters.

    Not exactly a complex idea.

In every sexual species the male differs from the female in some ways. Both in interactions socially and physically.

Perhaps. I dunno about intelligence - women are taught to be more credulous and stupid.

    *Shrugs*

Stereotyping is wrong, if only because it annoys me.

    What if it's true, Xev?

Stereotypes are only true in a general sense....

    *Shakes head*

That's got to be one of the stupidest things I've ever typed.

You're right, Tyler, they are often true, but they hurt individuals.

I'm not advocating a 'noble lie'. I simply think that we ought to try to judge individuals as open-mindedly as we can.

Which is more or less what happens, and I should shut up now.

    Sushi!,

They're only true because the stereotype effects the one being generalized, like the media circle. The media sees a trend and then creates it at the same time and then feeds it.

Even those who say they don't believe in stereotypes are effected by them in a negative or positive way.

There's an interesting article about this called "The Stereotype Trap" I'll try to find the author/publication.

Sterio typing is wrong because we all are different

My sister is probably stronger that i am because she is using her arm mussles more where as my strength is in my legs

I know women who are brickys they are WAY stronger than me

As to the male fighter thing its because 1 guy and 100 females can breed but 1 girl and 100 guys are useless

    its to protect the species

Stereotyping is good and right. The stereotypical male can not give birth to children. The stereotypical women can not write her name in the snow. There is a reason we have generalisations: they work. The problems arise when people use bullshit generalisations and stereotypes.

It's not a question of equality (don't understand why u called it sexism?). If you demand equality it means you are declaring yourself inferior. It's an issue of being allowed in race - but the adminstrators are the same as all the other runners and they decide you can't. You're not demanding equality, you're demanding the opportunity to be in the race - the opportunity to earn respect, not automatically get it.

    Does that make sense?

Yes. To demand equality is to say you are not yet equal. A far better option it to simply know you are equal, or at least have equal rights, and make it hell for anyone who disagrees.

The way things are moving these days, those who do the moving would have us believe that we are all equal to each other, that we all feel that same things, and that we all even want the same things. This is patently false... we just have to look around to see that.

This "fad", I hope, will pass. If it doesnt, we're in for a PC, shapeless, formless, blob of a coming century. I'm rapidly beginning to believe that once I've got my passel of turf I'll be happy to sit there and ride the whole damn century out.

OT BTW... Xev... what the hell is a "straw man"? I find it difficult to believe you spend your time setting fire to scarecrows in Utah, Does your sig have any significance?

In short, this whole 'everyone is equal' bull is leading us to become non-individualistic. My biggest complaint against it is something they've implemented in schools now, a belief, called 'Intelligence Types'. No longer are we told that certain kids are smarter, just that we're all 'smart' in 'different ways' and 'different fields'.

    ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL!
But some are more equal than others....

Tyler: I do wonder about what intelligence really is though. Some people are quite brilliant at learning languages, but suck at math. Some are the reverse.

Is one smarter than the other?

    Nonetheless, I agree.

WildCard: It's a logical fallacy known as the 'straw man'. Basically, a straw man is where you misrepresent your opponent's argument in order to attack it.

For instance, on topic, suppose I claim that women are not, in general, as good at math as men. A straw man would be if somone says "AHA! So women are naturally inferior? That is wrong because of this, that and the other thing"
