X3 was a bad movie. Let me start by saying that I am no fanboy of the X-men, but I am a fan of comics and a fan of the cinema. I grew up watching the X-men animated TV. show and I also really enjoyed the previous two films.

But, X3 was terrible on all fronts, and was most certainly the worst of the X-men films. My number one and two gripes with the film? Screen hogs Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry. I know that Hollywood survives by promoting with star power, but in a film about a group of people that work together they completely took up the majority of screen time. Also, they were terrible in their roles. Hugh Jackman did better in the last two films, his portrayal of Wolverine in this film was wooden and completely uninspired. And Halle Berry? Well Halle also gave nothing new to the character of Storm besides a cool haircut. Her performance in X2 also outshone this one. I hated that they even went so far as to kill off Cyclops in order to give these two other characters his role. That’s terrible writing, as it is nothing more than pandering to studio heads. This movie quickly degenerated into the Wolverine movie about his quest to save Jean Grey, which leads me to my next point…

So you have two names stealing the camera and acting poorly, adding to this films laundry list of problems you have multiple convoluted plots (bobby/rogue/kitty triangle, angel’s story, and the pyro/iceman tension). Also, there were two main plots of this film, The Phoenix plot and the Cure plot, they happened at the same time, but were weakened because of the lack of time to tell them both adequately. You could tell that there was a great deal cut from the movie, and that is bad story telling. I liked where both of those major plot threads were going, but each had a thrown together feel. Another thing, there were just too many characters. Multiple man played no real part in the film. Angel too was a useless character. He flew around, and saved his father, who cares?

Many of you might say that it was a good movie, with strong action scenes and effects, but you’d be wrong. The fight scenes all involved wolverine getting beat up, or stabbing people. The only other fights were storm fighting some. Think about it, we get Prof X getting obliterated and Iceman and Pyro fighting for 30 seconds, but that’s about it. They took out what made the X-men cool, which is interesting fights between mutants. A fight scene that did work was Kitty Pride v. Juggernaut, that was great. Two new characters and a novel chase scene. The fight scene at the end of the movie was bland. The army of mutants were all bland and seemed powerless and it basically degenerated into a normal fight scene. A scene that could have been that could have been amazing, the final stand in front of the prison was just boring. Also, did it bother anybody else that Magneto just stood there when he could have easily incapacitated two of the 6 x-men?

So, a quick recap: Poor acting and characters, overreached plotlines and too many characters, and rather inconsistent and bland action. So why are people saying that this is the best film of all time? I would blame short attention spans, this film did entertain in that there was something new and exciting every three minutes, but that doesn’t make a good film, it just makes it packed full of a lot of sub-par film.

Now, you may think that I am completely negative on this film, but on the contrary there are lots of things the film did right. The two biggest were Patrick Stewart and Ian McKlellan. Great actors, and great acting in this film. Why did Stewart have to bite the dust though? He was the best thing this film had going. I wish that he had more face time. The movie also did a good job with introducing some of the new mutants, namely Juggernaut and Kitty Pride.

In closing, I think that this film should earn the big box office that it most likely will, but I think that it should be noted that the other too films are much better acted, written and produced. I wish Bryan Singer hadn’t left the project, (SIGH) I know I sound terrible, but considering that this film could have been ten millions times better with a few changes and some more time, I am angry. This film was rushed and poorly executed.

Agreed with lot of what you said. Two very expansive storylines basically crammed into one movie, especially the phoenix saga. X-men fans had to scoff during the movie when professor X explains how phoenix was her alter ego.

I still liked the movie a lot, even though with so much tension building it could have used a LOT more action scenes.

Also Juggernaut was a complete joke.

Does anybody know whether it was directed by the same director as the other movies? The first two movies were excellent as far as Marvel movies go, but this one looked like an excuse to make one more movie. We don't get the idea that this is a great ideological battle, rather a petty squabble between bloated egos. Much like Underworld 2... I hope it's not a trend, what with Superman Returns and Casino Royale coming up. Batman Returns was the last "superhero" movie that I thought delivered what it promised.

Well, Zero Mass did have a number of valid complaints about XMen 3, however I don't think that it took away from my enjoyment of the movie.

    *************SPOILERS MAY EXIST********************

The Phoenix has 2 explanations in the cartoon/comic world; and the movie adopted and adapted one of them, which i guess as writers would need to do to facilitate the story and budget. Creating a CGI separate Phoenix entity would be quite expensive...Matter of fact Colussus was a victim of budget cuts since his metal morph form was no longer CGI.

Halle Berry DID actually pull off a coup in that Storm became the "star" of the show, but that was the deal she made with the production team for her career benefit, I can't blame her for not seeming to consult the viewer in her career choices. Would XMen fans NOT go to see the show if Storm's the top dog???

No real comments on Wolverine here, was kinda neutral to him.

Juggernaut is supposed to be MAGICALLY enhanced, that's really one of the two only complaints I had. Making him mutant, and thus succeptible to the "cure" power works for the movie, but I would have enjoyed seeing an onscreen defeat of a magic Juggernaut. Cyclops' demise also kinda sucked, but it was handled in a way as to not shock viewers til the end...when he doesn't "come back".

Oh and Prof X...wow, that was harsh...and I took a double whammy seeing that, cause it's also Capt. Jean Luc Picard!!! (sorry ppl i just thought i needed to vent)

Zero...did you see the after credits bit? Just asking...

I missed aftert he credits, but was told about it. That is just funny. I liked it.

  10. i liked the movie, despite its break from the storyline of the comic book version of events. i thought it looked better and had more substance than the other two movies in some ways. i didn't see the stuff after the credits, what was it?

True, it was more focussed. Maybe watching all three in a row would be more rewarding. My main criticism is that the climax of the movie was actually Picard...er...Prof. X's death. I half expected the Angel to do a little more than save his father, and the "cure" boy to throw more of a spanner in the works.

I also missed the part after the end!

I was waiting for the Fraiser theme song to breakout at some point. Would have made a killer inside joke to have that theme playing somewhere in the background at some point.

I understand that the explanation of the characters needed to be dumbed down some (Pheonix explanation, Juggernauts powers, etc.) and I think that that is fine b/c there is only so much you can do in a movie that is seperate from the Marvel universe. If I was all fanboy I would find offense with that, but I think that making everybody just mutants really helped things.

Anyway, I did see the bit after the credits (internet buzz was promising something to hint towards sequels) but Xavier being alive in another body isn't that amazing. Especially seeing as how producers of the movie have already said that there would not be a sequel. Wolverine is getting his own movie though, big surprise there!

Reasons why I think Wolverine blows (and thus will not see his movie):
-I don't give a crap what happens to him because he is nigh-invulnerable and any fight he is in just turns into a masochist's wet-dream.
-His mutant claws are a horrible weapon! Every fight he is in turns into a stabbing fest! Why would I spend money to watch some psycho stab people for two hours? Yuck. Now, hitting somebody with a arm made of metal or ice, now that's entertainment.
-The character of Wolverine is as bland as can be. He was really interesting in the 2nd movie wih his past being uncovered, but still has no flavor. He is played as the rough and tough guy, I've never seen that on the silver screen, also he spouts lame cliches, Oh boy, boring...

, I still enjoyed it despite the break-away from the comics OR Halle's Storm coup. Whatever team came up and executed Magneto's bridge thing needs to get a chunky christmas bonus this year...

X3 was the worst comic movie since Daredevil.

Not only that, but my room mates went and seen it and came back praising it. "They stayed so close to the comic book." I wanted to punch them in the head... they've never read the comic books, obviously; but claim to of.

What annoyed me the most was that the only decent mutant in the series had their powers stripped away. BAH.
