Al Gore's movie is out in which he claims global warming is the worst threat ever to face humanity. Worse than terrorism. Worse than Hitler. Worse than the USSR. Worse than the black plague.

The cause of this horrible threat? CO2 released by human activities. Gore says a majority of scientists agree with him that humans are destroying the earth. Now scientists are speaking out on the topic.

Why are actual climate scientists sceptical?
So what could be responsible for the slight rise in global temperatures we've noticed over the past few years?
That would certainly make sense in light of the observed rise in the temperature on Mars. The article goes on to refute pretty much the whole movie.

Regardless of whether global warming is caused by humans or other causes, you can't deny it is occurring. And you can't deny that pumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere doesn't help. (Or can you?)

Global warming is a major issue which governments are going to have to get serious about, sooner rather than later.

I do admit that there has been a slight rise in average global temperature. I do not think there is sufficient evidence that this rise is anthropogenic. To quote my original post:

Firstly AIDS is worse than all of those things by far. Yes, global warming is a bigger theat to humanity, than any of those things. Terrorism, the Black Plague, Hitler, and ?communism? all have left human life very stable. Global warming would mean more hurricanes, more often. It would also mean floods and the detering of coral reefs, which reduces sea life on a large scale, which takes away one of our most vital food supplies.

    On the CO2 temperature correlation:
    http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2005/11/650000-years-of-greenhouse-gas-concentrations/
    Seems it does correlate.

That's a bit of a strawman. No one is suggesting that CO2 is the only factor that influences the earth's temperature. What is being suggested is that, overall, CO2 is a good predictor of temperature.

Do you have any actual numbers? 100s of climate scientists is probably shit all when the total number of climate scientists are considered. Apparently, there are so few climate scientists that believe in GW that the reporter couldn't find one to balance out his/her article.

Why is Al gore an Idiot when it was American Defence agency which released a report saying that Global Warming is a bigger threat to national security than Terrorism. How many terrorist attacks can you count which happened on US soil? 2 - 3- 5 ???
Why was it that every attack was linked to FBI - Timothy Mcveigh blew FBI HQ, 1st WTC bombimg was a sting operation by FBI and was recorded on tape that FBI head wanted the spy to blow up the WTC. 911 is still not explained...so terrorism for US is not a big issue except if you are one of the defence industrial complex member...out there to make a profit..

US is reponsible for burning 30% of worlds energy and pollution ..for just 3 percent of world population .. what is so idiotic about asking people to be aware of the dangers of burning fossil fuels at this alarming rate...

Well, if this gets people talking about the matter -- really and properly talking, as opposed to the general "ho-hum another boring scientist with an opinion" then perhaps there is a chance that this is a good thing. From what I have seen, this is far more of a political move to see what a certain group can pass off on everyone else. Any science that may exist is distorted into pseudoscience and only exists as an undercurrent at best to the whole matter.

Evidence the widespread trumpeting of the "fact" that 100% of all people with brains have examined the evidence and determined that all possible evidence supports in absolute and complete terms exactly what the doomsayers are preaching to us on the matter. Anyone with a different opinion -- including those with many academic credits in related fields and many years of work on the matter who hold a difference of opinion are to be marginalized.

Really now, there has not been so much hubris in any organization since the catholic church immediately pre-reformation. I find the whole matter just sickening.

MAW seems only interested in slamming Al. Surely you can do better than this pot-shot thread. Let's hear why you don't like Gore.

Let's see.........Hmmmm? If the ave. temperatures worldwide continue to rise over the next 5 or 10 years, is that not global warming? If the ice sheets in Antartica and the glaciers in northern europe continue to melt at a faster than ave. rate, is that not global warming? If the ocean levels continue to rise an inch or two per year, is that not caused by global warming? So, if the things I just mentioned are not related to global warming, then what is? Elephants and rhinos?

Not quite. The true believers hold that CO2 CAUSES temperature to rise, like a giant global thermostat. There's a lot of good stuff at JunkScience.com on this topic. The main point brought up there is that the effect of CO2 on temperature is logarithmic, meaning that at a certain point, additional CO2 will have no effect, and that we are near that level already.

    How Clintonian of you.
Or has occured, or will occur.
Doesn't help global warming, or doesn't help combating global warming?
How major serious? Quantify for us the actual human contribution to "global warming".

We contribute. Contribute how much compared to all other sources?

Show us the numbers, here ===>

I'm not saying they don't. Your original quote questioned the historical correlation between CO2 and temperature. Historical data shows a good correlation, contrary to what you believe.

    Didn't you just quote:
Do you realise that Steven Milloy has a degree in health science is funded by Exxon-Mobil and is basically a joke.

Yeah, surely all that melting ice won't have any impact on sea levels. Could Republicans have their heads thrusted any further into the sand?

Even as a republican, I believe in global warming. Many of us do.
I simply believe that it is partly natural and that a warmed planet is in no way inferior to the one we have right now.

The earth is currently unnaturally cool in comparison to average temperatures on an evolutionary or geological scale.

In a billion years or so, thanks to mother sun, you won't have to worry about the earth being 'unnaturally' cool. In fact, if you're still around then, you might want to consider investing a few $$$ in the air conditioner and the sun screen industry.

If Republicans had existed and been in charge before the last Ice Age, none of us would be here today. 'It's not getting colder. It's a liberal lie. No need to do anything.'

Ever heard of "global dimming"? It's a side effect of pollution. Small particles suspended in high altitude creates more dense clouds that reflect more sunlight than normal clouds. It is countering the effect of "global warming". That's why CO2 and temperature don't correlate nicely.

Shhh! If global dimming becomes common knowledge, Republicans will exploit it to justify more pollution.
