You rejected the hypothesis that some form of electrical discharge might be the explanation for the green light you witnessed. You were quite dismissive of those who suggested this.
You denied that lightning could be green. You didn't just say that you thought that unlikely, or that in your experience lightning wasn't green. You came out very directly and said it wasn't green and the suggestion of electrical discharge was wrong.
Such definite statements imply a knowledge of the phenomenom being discussed. I cited to examples of lightning forms that may be green - coronal discharges and green elves. You then asked "What is a green elf?".

Now, Ogmios, I am not insulting you when I asked if you thought you might be being arrogant.
    a) You don't have much knowledge of atmospheric electrical phenomena, or you would have known about green elves.
    b) It certainly seems to me arrogant to express definitive opinions on atmospheric electrical phenomena when you don't have much knowledge of them.
    c) You don't appear to think this is arrogant.

So, on these three specific issues I have stated facts and only facts. I don't understand how a fact can be an insult.

Green elves are amporphous, faint, green discharges, occuring at high altitude above cloud level and appearing for at most a couple of seconds just after a conventional lightning discharge within the cloud.
I am not proposing these as an explanation for what you saw. I am mentioning them to counter your definitive statement that lightning is never green.

  3. Over a given age, yes. But you mentioning "glimmers", probably read wrong, but if you find you get the occasional bright flash in the periphery of your vision - get it checked. Sometimes the larger clumps floating around in there come into contact with the optic nerve - can cause damage without treatment. Equally, if you're being really plagued by the things, there are steps can be taken to break them down so as not to be as prominent...

    Just a thought.

Pish - nonsense woman! It's was just a polite enquiry was all, showing an interest in one's fellow members, that sort of kidney - nothing to make a song and dance over...!

Just the people, not the theory.

If it was lightning, or powerlines (whatever), there would be no reason to talk about it. So when I talk about it, I assume there is some other explanation. And I had no intention of talking about whether or not it's logical to assume this. Hence this branch of conversation seemed pointless and stupid. Certainly not worth three pages.

Anything is possible, so of course it might have been electrical activity. I just don't remember any powerlines in that direction.

Or maybe I don't speak english natively.

But you have proved I have no authority, and you are now free to disbelief anything I say. After all, I didn't know a fact.

Facts never are. It is in how you deliver it. Not what you say, but how you say it.

    I'll argue faint.
And "is seen above cloud level" when it happens "just after a conventional lightning discharge within the cloud", since we've been taught you can't see what's above a cloud, if the cloud is there.

Then proceed to say there was no lightning in the area at the time. If you'd say it was caused by a converter going off, I'd reply with "a conventional lightning discharge within the cloud" (bolds by me).

So how are you suggesting this was a "green elf" phenomenon? Could you post a link actually describing the phenomenon or produce photos?

You write English extremely well. All I can remember of Finnish from three weeks in Liperensalo thirty five years ago is olut.

Nowhere have I suggested that green elves were responsible for what you saw. In fact I explicitly stated that I was not making that claim. You even quoted the sentence where I said that.

I am not proposing these as an explanation for what you saw. I am mentioning them to counter your definitive statement that lightning is never green.
You made an absolute statement: lightning is never green. I gave you two examples - coronal discharges and green elves, where it can be green. If something you use as a central feature of your argument (lightning is never green) can be shown to be false, then I have weakened your argument. That was my objective.

Ah. So there is no argument.

I tried to say that lightning is yellow in normal atmoshpere (nitrogen, I suppose..), and unless there is some other gas conducting electricity, there are no other colors. Sorry, as I failed to write this up.

And I didn't really discard it as much as ignored it. I see no use in talking about how this really was some mundane, everyday occurence in the block. In that case, there would be no reason to discuss it, and discussing it would be waste of time. If there is to be a discussing, we must assume this is something not explained.

And my english is propably good because I read and hear lots of english. Doesn't mean I know the vocabulary well (or know some specialised words never used on TV..). Finnish, on the other hand, is spoken by some 5,000,000 people in the world, so...

I doubt Lsufos ban is anything to do with Mr Anonymous. Lsufos has been allowed for a long while to constantly spam his own personal website which in certain respect cried out for complete moderation however I hadn't cleaned up those posts. Lsufos has been for a couple of months in seriously flammatory dialogue with other forums members and is more than likely the reason he's been banned (along with his advertisment spam)

It's nothing to do with alien conspiracies, secret shadow government figures or anything else so conspiracy drive, it's purely down to his own actions.

  12. Perhaps you would also be kind enough to do the honours with this one also, if we must justify our actions to this banned former member. I would be grateful.

its interesting, but something like this happened in canada not too long ago (In the last decade? I forget the exact time) where the entire north eastern side of canada blacked out, they reported similiar events, it was caused by a solar flare on the sun releasing a massive energy storm.

Well Canada also has the Magnetic North pole shifting beneath it which might of also had a little something to do with such an event.

you can say "I know the northern lights" all you want, and I can say I know lightning, growing up on the plains of Kansas/Missouri you see some of the most fascinating lightning, and I can say that I've seen everything from Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, and even red (though I think that was from pollution in the air, I saw it over Kansas City, MO). I really do suggest that if you're in the area look out for storms, best light show ever! as for the Canada thing, I saw a video on it a long long time ago on the Discovery channel, the canadian guy they interviewed was pretty sure it was aliens too
