Back when all those asteroid movies were coming out people were saying things like (southernish accent) 'weyell if theyer was an ayasteroid theyen we woulda blowed it to heyell and the world woulda been ahappy agayain.' In other worlds-er-words, we would all come together to embrace that we really are just one species that has been divided many different ways by various people or possibly concepts.

For me, I don't think that an asteroid would, pardon my english, do diddley-squat to unite us under one government. I'm in the process of reading the unbelievably good Enders Game, by Orson Scott Card, and he talks about how another alien race has assaulted humanity and almost, almost wiped it out. The end of this future war is upon them, and the temporary world government set up is beginning to fail and soon the world will become what it once was: full of different countries trying to rule the world through force and not through agreement.

Is a united (not as in united states, mind you) what we really want in the first place? If one were to be created then one of the first laws would have to be diversity above say, an aryan world, where people could keep their same way of life, their language, their customs while their poor governments and bickering dictators are done away with to be replaced with whatever is deemed the best political system at the time. Is this what the world really wants, or is it too high a standard to ask for? It sounds good but unlikely, maybe the closest to a peaceful utopia that we could get to.

But what would do it? Is it going to happen? I think that yes, sooner or later, through force or an extraordinary event (something religious, something extrasolar

) the world will be united, maybe permanently, maybe temporarily. One thing history has shown me is that no matter how strong the government it always, always falls. There is not a single government on earth that was around when humans began to establish political tribes and converting hunter-gatherers to warriors.

So it would take something that has never happened before. What would it be?

For me, my guess is an assault or a message from an alien race.

    I loved Enders Game!!!!

Anyways, I think that the world will never be totaly united because there will always be people like Hitler, and other people like that, people who think they want to be the bad apple!

Ender, get your bum over to scifi and join our little discussions there. That's an order, commander (barely recognizable pun meant to remind you of the series).

There will always be bad people, but I've been saying for awhile that there really aren't as many bad people before, that the world is gradually getting better. Wouldn't you rather live now than a thousand years ago?

What would it take to unite the world? A ruthless dictator with an enormous military behind him.

However, a united world would, in my opinion, be bad for growth and progress. Competition and conflict help drive progress.

    I agree with "Q"
Plus a little bit of behind the scene directional psychology.

I think the idea of the movie "Contact" would go a long way. Maybe we could get together and dig-up a Stargate or two and show the world.

What will it take to unite the world?

A problem that threatens the whole world and can only be solved if the whole world co-operates. Such scenarios as:

    Alien invasions

MAJOR global warming (or when the world recognizes that global warming is a problem now)

A devestating new plague with 90%+ mortality rates etc, manmade or natural, doesnt matter

    Um...other stuff!

We have a place, but the Egyptian government is not giving permission to dig under Sphinx paw....

There is another place somewhere in the Himalayas with a NORAD like bunker with advanced technology.....

Alien threat will come when we send an ION drive probe to a star system to take a peek and they send a few probes our way with small particle weapon mounted that destroys some of our satellites.

Well ... we "could" buy the Sphinx ... And for the Himalayan bunker can I get a link to get me up and running on the subject? I also heard a long time ago about a place in Peru that contained a hollowed-out tunnel too precise to be crafted by man of the era in which it was believed constructed ... to be a fly on the wall ...

What we really need is have a group of like minded people setup a non-profit org and search for past civilizations. I am sure we will find something - because in the past they were not looking for it. They were only searching for spanish gold etc. Story has it that in Moab (Utah) area, those vertical cliffs has secret hideouts....

We may have to move this thought to "Ancient or Past civilization" topic....
