Hi all, i thought it would be fun to have a contest of which country has produced the best bands, Lets check the bands/solo artists for the US you have Bob Dylan Elvis (even though i dont like him) Jimi hendrix James Brown for britain you have Beatles rolling stones Kinks the Who The Police i have to admit when it comes to soul music, and hihop the yanks are miles ahead of us, but for that Sixties stuff i think the brits are well on top. i will add more later your thoughts please people. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Take care zak
In many ways, you could call Jimi Hendrix a british performer. He was largely ignored over here in the states and his career began in the UK. Then, after he began to become well-known, he made his US 'debut' and sure, he became outrageously famous and popular, but the people only wanted to hear Purple Haze one more time. The US treated him pretty badly, in my opinion. Maybe he should have stayed in the UK and maybe he'd still be alive and playing jazz in some small club somewhere today.
It depends what time of music, sure.. but overall I think the UK owns the US. I'd guess 90% of the music I love is made by UK artists.
Yeah Hendrix was practically British. British band more or less. Dont forget Clapton and The Cream... Led Zeppelin etc
It would be interesting to see what percentage of current British purchased rock music is by American bands/solos vs. the vis-versa of American purchases. And I think you should add Michael Jackson to the American list.
The Cure, Happy Mondays, The Stone Roses, Charlatans, Joy Division, The Sisters of Mercy... And Iron Maiden... of course. But US... Pixies, Ramones, Butthole Surfers, Sonic Youth, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Tool... I can't decide really!
I would definitely say the UK rocks America in the 60's. With the exception of The Doors, Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and the Papas, and several other acts, the truly big names of the 60's were British, and thus they dominate in that regard. The 70's are more split, but the British still have a slight edge. It's once you get more into the 80's, or are discussing black or country music, that America starts to shine. By the 90's, Britain isn't producing the sort of talents that she used to. And currently, I would say American music dominates on all levels, with the British having Radiohead, Coldplay, and James Blunt, to name a few I can think of off hand, that are pretty popular, but not much else. Really, though, both the US and UK have much to offer in regards to popular genres of music. They are indispensible to one another in terms of musical exchanges of ideas, also. Clearly, Anglo-American music is better to speak of, rather then simply "is it the US or UK which dominates the music world"? However, I would note that I think music has degenerated tremendously in the last few years.
hey IceAge thank you for your comments Michael Jackson is a good addition to the yanks portfolio - good call well up u ntil and including the album "bad", most of his music after this album was pretty feeble though. Good Afternoon PJ, I hope all is going well with you An interesting analysis, yes defintely have the doors, simon and garfunkel and to an extent mama's and papas for the yanks in the 60's Black music though, america is miles ahead. In the 90's the brits also had Oasis, Blur, Supergrass abnd so on and so forth. The US is ahead in house music, garage and the like, but miles behind in Drum and bass. i feel british music is less production focused in gerenral, and is more raw... anyway guys keep them coming any girls got opinions on this??!!? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Take care zak
overall i would say british music is better, but i actually listen to more american music, the heavy rock period of the 80s and early 90s
I don't know about better, but I listen to british music more than american, even though there are/were a few spectacular american musicians like Patti Smith, Nirvana, Akrabu, some others.
As much as I like a lot of American bands lately, British music tends to be better overall, although America produces better quality(I use this term loosely) of pop music, seeing as to be fair pop music this side of the atlantic tends to come from Ireland.
Depends on the type of music you prefer, my favorite U.S. band are Cheap Trick, their version of Elvis's "Dont be cruel" is a classic. British bands are pretty good at the pop music type. You should try the ICELANDIC MUSIC SCENE, its a new sound other than Bjork.
Are any of them better than Sigur Rós? If so I want to hear them. Oh, and us Brits are best, so shut up.
