Why the best? I really can't understand that statement.
I've tried Ubuntu several times and the longest time it lasted was 5 days or so.

I found that Ubuntu was less trouble than Windows. On installing windows I had to install two drivers and restart. On installing Ubuntu all I had to do was change a DHCP setting due to a router peculiarity. Installing stuff is far, far easier on Ubuntu, third party software is automatically updated and it has more out of the box functionality. Upgrading is done over the net with a single command and it requires no restart (though it was reccommended). Further, Linux doesn't require maintainence tasks like adware or virus scanning.

just because of the wide array of built-in hardware support, the simple setup, and the variety of installed software.

Since I'm not a Linux guru, a large part of the Linux experience for me is how difficult it is to get a machine up and running to a basic level. I've found Ubuntu to be amongst the easiest in this catagory.

I've heard lots of good things about Ubuntu. I'm going to install it on my next pc.
    But they have different versions.
    Kubuntu
    Edubuntu
    Xubuntu

I'm not sure which is better between Ubuntu and Kubuntu.
It seems like Xubuntu would be the best though because it is lighter on the system. Even if the system is the latest high performance desktop. Wouldn't Xubuntu still be the best OS?

I don't get Edubuntu. Why is it an OS? Isn't it possible to just get regular Ubuntu, and install all the educational crap? Why have an Edubuntu OS?

Edubuntu is meant to be lightweight -- and I believe it's what they are putting on the $100 laptops for kids.

Edubuntu is an Ubuntu bundled with educational software and simplified for the very small brains of teachers.

    regular Ubuntu:

kubuntu and xubuntu are different than regular ubuntu only based on thier desktop environment - the part that you deal with when browsing for files, opening applications, etc. Akin to the Windows Explorer, regular Ubuntu uses Gnome, Kubuntu uses KDE, and Xubuntu uses a lightweight DE that I haven't used before.

I've had a few problems with gnomes 'oversimplication'. Haven't liked it since 1.4.. but then again it is the most solid variant of ubuntu, so go with that.

Which Windows? Cause I'm not even going to bother 'defending' the 9x/ME rubbish. 2000/2003/XP/MCE are all quite acceptable...in my experience anyways.

Ubuntu - Live CD locked up before even getting to a UI screen. Consistently.
Windows - installed with nary a sigh or BSOD.
Mandriva - installed even smoother than Windows. (Avatar's suggestion
