As someone who drinks...a lot I can tell you that oftentimes I ask myself the same question: "why the fuck do I do this?"

So I don't drink for a day or two, but then I'm at a restaurant or someone offers me a beer and I have a sip and it's like "oh yah."

It's pretty nice in moderation. That's the key: moderation. Am I guilty of not being moderate sometimes? Yes. But I pay for it with a headache in the morning.

No big deal. Nothing a good healthy breakfast can't take care of.

I don't like the distorted perception it creates and I like to be in control of myself, so I don't drink. I can have fun and relax without it.
If there's a huge party or other occasion I may take a glass of wine to honour the host during the first toast, but not more.

But drinking, whiskey and music are definately going to bring up something about the Irish, fighting's got nothing to do with it.

I'm Irish, and I'll tell you honestly, a lot of the stereotypes about the Irish are true: We are drunken, old-fashioned-clothes-wearing, whiskey-drinking, pub-loving, England-hating, farm-owning Paddys, everywhere except Dublin.

And that's me being really honest because I am Irish.

But we're also foreigner(except the English)-welcoming, environment-helping, great-beer-making, great-pub-building, one-of-the-oldest-languages-in-Europe-speaking, Mass-going, peace-loving (except with England), non-materialistic, friendly, people. And we're proven to be the happiest people in Europe. We have a beautiful country and although we have our faults, people who come to Ireland say we are the most tolerant people (except of the English).

And Irish people don't get into bar fights, honest to God, I'd know. I've been in plenty of pubs and I've never once seen a bar fight except one between a Catholic and a Protestant but that's different.

And there's twice as many cows as people in Ireland. The whole country is very agricultural, preserved, and beautiful.

"Theres a great myth in America about the 'passion' of the Irish. The only time we're passionate is when we're singing about what the English did to us for four hundred years!"

One man's oppinion. Frank McCourt lived an incredibly difficult childhood because the English came, destroyed the country, and when we finally got them out, we didn't know where we were. Frank McCourt had a such a bad time because there was no money after the English left, the Protestants had sucked it all out of the Catholics over those 400 years. No, actually, it was 700 years.

The Irish are the friendliest people, anyone who's been to Ireland will agree. I go on holidays to the continent a lot, but I always feel a bit uncomfortable because of the apparent coldness in the manners of the people. When I asked someone who lived there who had been to Ireland, they said they could understand where I was coming from, that the Irish were so warm and welcoming that on the continent people's formality can seem a little condescending.

Is there anybody on this forum who's not Irish but has been to Ireland and can offer first-hand proof instead of quotes of some bitter old man who thinks he was the only one who suffered during those times?

I didn't think the 'fighting" stereotype was supposed to be an accurate and certain depiction of a negative trait. I always thought it was supposed to be one of those cute things that people joke about themselves, but never really take seriously. I go to Irish pubs every now and then, and they'll have these sorts of things (this was a novelty tee-shirt from a microbrewery in Pensacola Florida):

You see, domesticated om, most Irish pubs I've been in outside of Ireland have been shameful, pictures of the Irish constitution with the words spelt wrong, blaring American music and the Irish word for women written on the men's bathroom and the word for hag written on the womens' bathroom etc. They really have no clue.

I enjoy a good glass of brandy while listening to good music or relaxing reading a book. I also like a glass of wine with my meals from time to time but I don't drink daily. It relaxes me when I have just ONE glass or TWO but any more than that it just makes me more aggressive and silly.

Red wine relaxes one, white wine enlives one.

I am going to the 2007 Reading Beer and Wine festival this Saturday!!

To get drunk, I drink cheap white cider with my friends. I have a fucking awful headache right now.

For pleasure, I drink wines, ales and port.

We drink 'cos it's fun! It's part of our culture - there is a bar downstairs in the same building I live in with about 200 other students.

I find people who don't drink generally unadventurous, uptight, and boring to be around. So where best to avoid them, than in a bar?

Also, I like a glass of wine with dinner. A nice fully loaded red, usually, although recently, I have started to appreciate white wine again, and come full circle.

Alcohol in moderation, red wine in particular, is good for you.

Oh, and Darksidz, all this crap you spout about alcohol making our minds skewed and do things we re are afraid of wanting too, ... utter bullshit.

For one, the vast majority of drinkers do not drink until they are out of control, second, go and get drunk so you have an educated perspective on the matter, and cease putting your own weak mind into a situation you think you couldn't handle.
