I suppose one characteristic is that an intellectual is not afraid to open a book.

    An excellent question Zak!

I wonder where you got the idea to post this question since it seems rather relevant to a lot of the discussion going on in sciforums. And although I am not going to formulate a definition here I certainly look forward to the responses to this interesting thread topic and will maybe participate at a later date.

    Or close one.

An intellectual in this day and time is one who tells you that he's an intellectual!

No, I ain't one of them ....I just learned how to spell it a few days ago!

That's usually a pretty good start. The desire to actualize that potential is fairly important though: plenty of candidates don't study in-depth or spend time on intellectual endeavors.

Condensed into a few words, it's someone willing to invest a lot of time and effort studying a subject or subjects in order to better understand and discover as many ramifications as possible.

It can also be contrasted with the other end of the spectrum which you so very often see displayed here - people too lazy to do any studying at all and yet think they know the answer to everything!

I have a friend who considers herself to be an intellectual. However she is not and has simply learned how to intellectualize as a way of escaping those things she does not want to face. Although, she has picked up a book or two.

An intellectual is one of those things this forum is desperately in need of: Someone that actually thinks.

I, myself, simply feel my way to “truth”.

If it feels right, it is right.
