Soaps are a "virtual family" for so many of us who aren't terribly social in real life. Of course any good show with well-developed, sympathetic characters and a halfway believable plot can do that. NCIS, the Riches. Angel was a nail-biter and that was really only halfway believable. But those shows only run once a week for half the year, not good enough. A soap is on every day, just like real life. You can care about the characters and check in on them every day as part of your own daily schedule.
Yeah but we don't all feel the way you do. I personally could not stand the original series. For a fan of print sci fi, it was so 1930s with just a twist in the politics. But I was enraptured byTNG and have loved all the subsequent series. I will be delighted if they bring it back, maybe set a generation or two ahead in a recognizable future. Data will of course still be there, having artificially aged himself to make people comfortable with him and allowing Brent Spiner to still play the role. The sci fi is still a little hokey but the storytelling is more akin to literature instead of pulp.
    What, did you miss Lexx?

Yes, I thought Farscape was the best of the lot. The makeup, Muppetry and visual effects were far beyond the other shows and really made me feel like I was there. It had a lot of thought-provoking or simply poignant stories, but so did TNG and Bab5, and to a lesser extent DS9. But the universe they created is very rich and could easily support a whole new series with new characters and stories. For having FTL travel, the milieu in Star Trek is pretty constricted, and the same for Stargate even though they've actually explored a second galaxy. The milieu in Farscape is more what I would expect, with an untold number of civilizations. Galactic domination being somewhat elusive due to the limitations of even whiz-bang technology.

Robot's believing in God ? In space above and beyond they had believed in 1 rule "take a chanse"; but the cylons are believers in God and kill everyone that doesn't????? like the cylons more in the original series though.

The show made it pretty clear that even though the cylons are artificial creations, they aren't just cold, calculating machines. They have emotions, they do odd things simply because they think it would be fun, they get angry, etc. Some of them believe in a strange religion. Still, I don't see how anyone could possibly call the show "religious".

I actually kind of prefer the new cylons. I always thought the old ones were odd – if they don’t have any emotion, fear of death, etc…then why did they bother rebelling in the first place? And why did they come looking for revenge? That’s not the sort of things that a cold, calculating machine does, it’s the sort of thing that a pissed off machine does.

I rather believe the cylons are yust artificial humans having some serious ego problems being selectivly deaf and the whole voting system... I wonder at the end of the third season if it would turn out that there was a voting on weather to attac the colonies and that it got 7-5 aproval

euh ... did you see the old series? Cylons wheren't created bij humans.
as for anger. Just program a robot to kill all life it will. that has nothing to do with emotions.
I like the new serie too butt you can't compair the two.

like why the hell is starbuck a girl ?Is it to put a pretty girl in the show? starbuck in the original show had plenty of pretty girls. Is it to have a girl with balls in the show? I though Athena an Casseopea where pretty damn though.
and one of the main hero's, boomer, is now a female cylon.
Offcourse like i said i only saw 3 episodes thusfar so im not in possition of debating things against people who saw 3seasons

I think I saw that one on the late late show one day. If I remember right, the droids had wierd names and it was kind of a "hippy" type movie (a 1960's sensibility).

Yep, that's the one. Reminds me of the hippies in Dark Star.
    Here's a link to that film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067756/
I'm surprised no ones remade it, I thought it was a good movie. Then again the yanks have been busy remaking classic British films and turning them into a pile of crap.

I checked out your profile. You have an interesting pattern. You pop in, make a few posts, then come back two or three years latter. Kind of like a SciForum's Rip Van Winkle.

    Welcome back.

They had to get rid of StarGate to make room for masterpieces like Manskitto.

LOL, yes, I have been a bit on the elusive side, I admit my guilt. At one stage I'd forgot I was even signed up here, until a friend mentioned it. I shall try to be good from now on.

And just for the record, B-Movies would be a good idea as re-makes.

Personally, I thought stargate was much better when it was on showtime.

I concur, you see showtime knew how to fund / make series. The Outer Limits, Lexx, all these are prime examples. When the guidance of showtime is lost there is always quality issues, luckily for Stargate it was postponed, but the best example of trash followups is Stargate Atlantis.
