can students (as oppose to institutions and lecturers/researchers and what not) propose projects directly to companies for sponsership..

if so, how do they go about doing so? and what work they need to do beforehand and how do they contact a potential company.

Write to them, with your proposal.

It depends on the research, who the sponsoring company is, and where the research will be completed.

I think it is possible in principle, but wouldn't it be better if you apply for funding together with your supervisor?

well then i have to convince the supervisor and the company.... and one is better than two that need convincing.

what is included in a research proposal... There is the outcome of research, but its not a product your selling cos its research right.?

It's effectively an extended abstract with speculation rather than results.

If you're an undergrad, no company is gonna give you a second glance unless you have a professional scientist to back you, i.e. propose it to your supervisor first. If he thinks it's reasonable, he'll probably find funding for you.
