well that would mean one is agnostic.
Being an agnostic, one will not have power of belief or general purpose...as the mind will be swayed constantly.

Don't think that's what is being described.

I think ashpwner was saying people should reserve their faith (or lack thereof) for their private lives and not feel the need to prove or disprove it to sway others' beliefs.

but faith influences what one does in life. And what if I find my way in life and feel happy while I see others in discontempt, would that not be egoistical of me not to help them feel better?

Of course you could make that argument. But what leads you to believe others are in discontempt with their beliefs? Perhaps they appear to be unhappy but are bothered by people making assumptions on the strength of their convictions?

 playing devil's advocate. I see both sides of the issue. As a Christian, I get the whole evangelical outreach to others, but as a very liberal Christian I also understand the flip side of preachy annoyance.

I thought this was kind of what you were getting at.....
draqon, I think this question is mostly about the approach. No one wants to be force-fed others' beliefs.

oh no i did not mean to say christians iw as using them as an example eg the jehovas witnes are the worst for wanting you to convert

yeah, I know what you mean. Hence, in my last post, why I said I thought you had brought this up mostly because of the approach these groups take ...for example, the annoying door-to-door Jehova's Witness solicitations

If you donĀ“t trust what you believe in, you will want others to "join the team" in order to feel more confortable with your beliefs.

well, if you interact with another and they question (even by disbelieving) your faith, you have to defend it, right?

"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you." (Matthew 5:38-42, NIV)

Why can't you just ignore them?

My understanding of christianity has given me the impression that it is the job of a Christian to "recruit" other members of society. Ignoring someone might go against a rule of someone's belief, perhaps it is their job to do otherwise.

Because if those trying to convince others that God is real then those people could be influenced to join whatever religion that is doing the persuading. The more people that are convinced the more people in their following and the more money in their pockets without having to anything but convince someone of a belief, not a fact.
