Do theists really believe that they are going to physically spend eternity in hell if they dont obey their bible doctrine?

I mean are you literally affraid (to the letter) that this foretelling will realize?

I was raised it was this way. My Mom still thinks its this way. She will look down from heaven and see me tortured day after day for all eternity. Heaven is a physical place, as is hell.
(kinda like that guy chained to a rock who got his liver eaten out, day after day)

Not having an afterlife is scarier to some. She's christian and its part of the package. He's called the Father and parents punish their children for disobedience. Hell just makes the decision to be good easier.

what is so scary about nothing after life?

What is so scary about being good when you personally feel its warranted, not hurting anyone who doesnt deserve it, not disrespecting anyone who earns respect, and first and foremost trying to make some kind of difference in your 80 years on earth?

Fine, if that's how you feel. But why should you denigrate others who feel differently than you? You wish to believe as you do, why can't you allow others to believe as they wish? ...without your condemnation and ridicule?

For me personally? I simply wanted to be with God/Jesus, as in be in their Presence...conversing, asking questions etc... I mean, really...I wanted to be with them! That's it. Fear of hell never really entered into the picture. I was drawn to God, and facinated by the Person of Jesus as presented in the Gospels, movies etc.

    Where did I ridicule you?

I merely said I dont allow myself to be controlled by fear, are you admitting that you do? and feel self-condemnation for it?

It's the unknown. Some people naturally have a fear towards things they don't understand.

such a view tends to make life absurd

conditioned nature makes it practically impossible to abide by what you suggest - the pushings of lust, wrath, envy, etc usually make such a world view translate into another form of egotism

It's not so much that we are stupid,
but more so we go on doing stupid things because we have learned never to believe the simple answer

How is rebirth good? You are reborn with your entire memory wiped out... that *is* death. The death of all of your memories, personality, the death of you, in a sense, forever.

rebirth is good for those who recognize it need. Rebirth is change of a soul. Rebirth unlike heaven and hell is not an end, rebirth allows life to go on with the
person experiencing different life...in different time...as different individual. It allows to be in life as anyone and still feel the consciousness.

Strange, the thought of heavenly bliss in an afterlife would make life appear to be absurd. Why bother living a life when heaven is so much better?

M*W: Okay, I understand now. Rebirth can be an important step in one's intellectual development. It was like I was born again when I realized there was no god, then I was awakened and everything made sense to me. Now, I gotcha!

Agreed. Its probably why they had to make suicide a mortal sin.
