And I've lived and spent plenty of time in Detroit, where that simple fact can get you mugged. I've wandered around tripping on mushrooms in the poor-ass sections of Atlanta, and those are not good places to be even when sober.

You want to see America a certain way, and you wouldn't accept evidence to the contrary.

Hey, I was very excited when I came to the US, land of the free and whatnot; if I don't feel the same way after staying there, don't blame me. I've been treated like crap too many times to feel good about it

Have you ever been the second half of an interracial couple? I'd be interested to know if there were any differences in experiences.

edit: I missed the Detroit part, I know this guy from Detroit, he (white, atheist, vegetarian, animal lover) certainly did not have a blase attitude towards it.

Is this the number of people with guns or just total quantity of owned guns? Some people have lots. Hard to imagine 90% of the people I see as having guns.

I think the former is probably true, guns must be like potato crisps and kittens; one is not enough?

I don't expect you to feel good about it, and of course where you feel safest is a personal matter.

No, but I've been mistaken for one a few times, when I'm out shooting pool with a black friend at those horrid date bars. I haven't noticed much hostility.
Not that there isn't racism in the US, or that I haven't noticed it, but I haven't personally encountered it in that situation.
Oddly enough, the only thing I've had people be weird about was when I date or appear to be on a date with an Asian man.

Hmm, I don't get weird looks when I'm with Asian guys, so I guess its a perspective thing.

Or the fact that I am white, and you are of the Indian subcontinent.

But it is not a big deal, I think it is more because white girl/black dude is common here, while white girl/asian dude is not.

Anyways I apologize if I am a bit "America rah rah," I am a bit of a patriot and I think we could offer a lot to the world, and I'm sorry you had bad experiences here.

    Thats what I meant.

Canadians are cool though, all the Canadians I have met are less tight assed and way more relaxed about stuff than their American counterparts.

You would be perfectly safe in my neighborhood, as you would in most locations in the States. I often don't even lock the doors to my home when I go shopping. But, just like in India, there are some places you would not want to be alone. Even in my smaller city, there is a neighborhood where drugs, violence and crime are rapant and even I would feel at risk walking down those streets alone at night. The majority of the violence in the US occurs in such locations and is much more rare in other areas. And SAM, the vast majority of gun owners keep the guns in their home to protect their family, not on their person.
Its like airbags in a car, you hope they never have to be used but it is still comforting to have them just in case.

Yeah, I know, I grew up reading NYT bestsellers.

But if I lost my way, would I walk up to a door and knock? No way. I'd call someone I know for directions instead. Who knows, I may get shot through the door by a trigger happy paranoid? (only half kidding, this has actually happened)

Guns are important. We need them when we need to have an armed revolution against the government. It's more difficult for US to fall into fascism because gun ownership is very high.

Yep. Because we own guns, we didn't allow Bush to expand executive powers or Congress to pass the Patriot Act.

I don't think the Patriot Act is that unpopular, especially when it was first signed. Bush still has the Evangelical Right and big corporations who are willing go down on the ship with him. If the general public knows anything and gives a shit about NWO and the fact that our own government was the mastermind behind 911, things would have been different.

    sam,
i noticed that you never related to the number one cause of death of 15 to 24 year olds in america.
this leads me to believe that you don't give a damn about the health and well-being of americans, you only like to rag on things in our constitution.

My main point is -we're defenseless against our government if we implement a ban on guns.
