Thousands of people wielding clubs and knives marched through Khartoum after Friday prayers denouncing what they termed the lenient sentencing of a British teacher for insulting Islam and calling for her to be shot.

Later the protestors joined other worshippers to congregate in Martyrs Square, in the centre of the capital, where they chanted "Shame, shame on the UK".

"Those who insult the Prophet of Islam should be punished with bullets," the crowd shouted after Gibbons, 54, was jailed for 15 days on charges stemming from naming a teddy bear Mohammed.

Authorities in Britain and Sudan refused to reveal where Mrs Gibbons, jailed for 15 days yesterday for insulting religion and inciting hatred, was serving her sentence for fear of rioting there.

Extra police were on duty and, mindful of last year's violent demonstrations following the publication of caricatures of Prophet Mohammed in Denmark, keen to prevent similar scenes.

British consular officials visited Mrs Gibbons, 54, this morning and said she was bearing up well.

An embassy spokesman said: "The consul and the deputy ambassador visited her this morning and she was fine. She's in good spirits and she's not being mistreated or anything like that."

David Miliband, who summoned the Sudan ambassador, Omer Siddig, to Whitehall last night to demand an explanation of the sentence, also spoke to the Sudanese Foreign Minister to express "in the strongest terms" his dismay that Mrs Gibbons had been convicted and jailed.

A Foreign Office spokesman said yesterday they were continuing to do all they could to ensure she was freed as soon as possible.

Her son, John, from Liverpool, has not yet been allowed to telephone her but was hoping to fly out to Sudan to visit her as soon as a visa could be arranged.

He stress that British people angered by his mother's jail sentence should not turn against Muslims.

"I don't not want this to lead to any anti-Muslims feeling in this country.

Saw in the papers, that the schoolchildren told in public, that one of the children in school , wanted to name one of the Teddy bears after himself (nothing to do with the Prophet) - AND THIS TEACHER OF BLASPHEMY ALLOWED HIM TO DO SO !!!!!!

What do muslims here feel, does she deserve to be shot for her teddy bears crimes against humanity?

Do you feel the locals should be allowed to club her to deaath with there clubs, or should be stabbed to death by the friendly masses?

My opinion is if they all had a job, a 9 to 5 job down the pits like everyone else instead of a 24 hour job in there local mosque, they might have something else on there minds other than teddy bears & cartoons, as the real world people struggle to do 2 or 3 jobs, they dont have time for this religous garbage.

I firmly believe all the problems in islam relate to far to much time reading the koran & listening to clerics & the top clerics in sudan are responsible for these demo's they oraganised them all.

Religon is a belief it is not someones entire life, but in islamic countries it has become this, hence all this highly strung atmosphere, all this eye for a eye shit, if i spent 24 hous aday reading the bible i would be a religous nut job to, blowing up abortion clinics etc.

It was numerous parents who complained to the school that started it all, not stupid parents, but parents who are letting religon dictate there sanity, if you are say in the moonies or something it does not mean you are stupid, most people in cults come from very rich familes & are well educated, look at tom cruise & that scientology crap, if you stump up $150k you get to know the big secret of it all, its like pay as you go to know the biggest secrets from what i gather cruise paid the $150k as did john travalter to basically find out we are all descendants of aliens, john travalto made a movie loosly along the lines of some of it.

Yes you are right, & yes there are very few inpolitics coming forward & saying how ludicrous this is, & how silly it makes islam look, the muslim scholar on bbc world news today, did not say it was the cleric or the familes involve to blame, he give a long winded scenario involving the cartoon fiasco & saying how muslims are reacting to the on going attacks against islam, almost as if each incident the cartoons, teddy bears are all registered on some black mark book there all holding, & there still holding our past crimes against us, i fail to see what him bringing the cartoon situation has to do with this issue, its like there all holding grudges, & him relaying the past on world news just reminds muslims that we were naughty in the past, & this is yet another example of our persecution of islam.
