If you do not have this album already, get it ASAP. It is truly a masterpiece, from a man for whom making fabulous music is almost instinctive.

    Uh oh, Divergent Opinions!

10 years is a long time, and UP was not worth waiting for.

While he has largely ignoring contemporary trends for years, and pursued his own sound and production values to great effect - this disc is full of 90s-style over-processing (all that phased percussion!) that truly sounds dated. Mrs. Fish, who is a little less obsessive than me said, interestingly, that you could hear it took ten years because there was too much “mucking around” and I agree; so many musicians have been through the studio and so many programmers and producers have been invited to tweak this or fiddle with that that nothing is left unprocessed or simple.

Peter Gabriel, to me, has always seemed a visionary... someone who always manages to surprise me. For an artist who has always been consistently innovative, this is disappointing I expected UP to have been far more adventurously spontaneous.

The first track is annoying. But don't let that stop you from giving the whole album a listen - several listens, if you can, because this isn't the sort of thing you can just swallow right down without thinking about it. The arrangements are dense and complex but the material is weak. The disc does end on a positive note for me. The Drop is simply beautiful. After the loud brash excesses of the previous nine tracks, it is shockingly peaceful.

People are very charitable to Gabriel reviewers and fans alike, but UP was a disappointment. Of course, that is just one Fish’s opinion.

While we have the fans online can anyone refresh my memory ? I saw a concert on video a long time ago where he takes the band out of a suitcase and puts them back in at the end but cant find it anywhere and don't remember the tour. Anyone know what I need to ask for ?
Also is this the same one where he's passed around by the crowd while singing 'lay your hands on me'?
I loved the early stuff myself but I like the visual stuff he produces and the video for 'mercy street' blew me away
    Hope you guys can help

Yes, goofy, the entire album is a little busy. I am glad to see Peter Gabriel back on the shelves, with something new. I really, really enjoy the new set of tunes though. I still regard Peter Gabriel as a music genius.
