I don't know what to think. It is hard to find a news source about Venezuela that isn't extremely biased.

At first, there were two things that made me sort of like him.
    1. Some people attempted a military coup against him, but because of his popularity, the people reinstated him. Also, the current US administration supported the short lived terrorists who overthrew a popular, democratically elected president.

    2. Some people I loathe and despise, as well as some media outlets, started ridiculous propaganda against them. I figured if they felt the need to use propaganda it is probably because they can't find a legitimate complaint of significance. Also, if these people dislike someone, he is probably good! These people were Pat Robertson, Rumsfield, Fox news, and others.

However, from what I hear lately, he doesn't appear trust worthy at all. But I'm not going to make much judgement since I have no reliable source on Venezuela...plus I'm not really paying attention anymore.

You're survey didn't cover my opinion: "I'm not fond of Chavez and I think he's on the precipice of becoming a despot" I'm not sure if he's quite "bloodthirsty" but despots tend to gravitate towards bloodlust after a while. Give him some time.

It is quite complicated. I neither like nor hate him, but I do support his anti-Imperialism. The United States is a rogue nation which likes to butt in on business which doesn't involve them, and he is right to take a stand against that.

According to some folks who track such things, a very popular ring tone being downloaded across South America right now is a recording of Fujimori shouting "I am innocent" (in Spanish) during his court trial in Peru a couple of weeks ago, followed by Juan Carlos saying "Shut up" to Chavez at that political gathering last month.

So it's "I am innocent" followed by "Shut up".

Chavez is very popular, but Venezuelans are not blind to his faults.

Indeed, He sounds like a good guy, but if he screws up, the people of Venezuela will not stand for it.

personally although i think he is a despot he is doing a decent amount of good mainly throwing off the us power in the region and trying to get the region to come together like the eu.

How, exactly, is he getting the region to come together?

Just how exactly is he "throwing off U.S. power in the region?" Be specific - with no generalities and post links to support your claim.

I seem to recall he recently had a falling out with Columbia. And we all know what the King of Spain thinks of him...

Although I've despised his silencing of opposition, because Chavez has apparently relented to the term limitation referendum, I'm still leaving him the benefit of the doubt, about his tyrant potential. His criticism of hubristic US foreign policy has been constructive, even humorous. So long as Chavez displays deeper respect for democracy than US leadership, then viva Chavez, y Viva La RevoluciĆ³n.

In the same sense that Britain is still a monarchy. The king is the cultural and symbolic leader of Spain, despite the fact that he wields little actual power. The public of Spain applauded his figuratively bitchslapping Hugo.
