    Nor is it up to par with most developed countries.

    I hate people who take advantage of welfare and government help. They make a bad stereotype for people who don't. I proudly support welfare because I lived on it and without it I'd probably be dead. I think that sometimes many people who don't support it don't realize that people on welfare are not just taking the money because they don't want to support themselves. I know very well that sometimes all bad things happen at once and you just can't seem to make ends meet, no matter how hard you try. It was disgraceful to apply for welfare knowing I couldn't support my kid, but it saved our lives. We didn't rejoice in the fact that I didn't have to work 5 jobs just so we wouldn't be on welfare. I think 4 is my limit.

    You see? I agree with Benthur they are right. Welfare is not bad and the only people who complain are fools that think a lack of it would increase their wages, infact it would not! Without welfare you'd still be in the same financial situation you are today, there'd be no huge difference in your income, gimmie a break tax payers! They just don't like the idea of someone being helped.

    Yep. With or without welfare you're still broker then broke. Its just nice to actually have food everyday instead instead of pretending like you eat everyday. You wouldn't believe how much of what you earn goes into food...man.

    I know this very well, it's rather amusing. What I think is just buy a bean burrito with rice from Taco Bell everyday and then you will be A.O.K. it's only a buck and then you can have like a salad for lunch. You'd save lots of money!

    My average food expenditures (though I'm single) for the month are about $40. I think the cheapest I've gone was $20 one month, though I'll admit some of that was thanks to leftovers from the previous $40 month. I'm sure that my food budget would be less if I didn't weigh as much as I currently do, but oh well.

    I had a budget of about $25 if I cut into spending money, for three people that was one meal a day for my kid and my husband and I had to go on what was left. Those were such bad times...

    $25 a month??? F*ck.

    I grew up on welfare. I hate that system. I wish the State made it mandatory so that some single mothers would be forced to work (or do something) rather than watch tv, drink home brewed wine and smoke cigarettes all day.

    Has anyone seen the price of food lately? I could possibly get away with $ 250 per month. My friends have been on food stamps now and then, they got $175 a month and it's not enough.

    I've been living on ~$40 for well over a year now. My typical daily food budget is >$1, but some days I have to go and splurge, thus my budget averages $40 instead of $25.

    You live off 1$ a day for food? I call bullshit on that.

    2 packs of ramen == $.25

    1 pack of hot dogs == >$1

    Throw in a hot dog per pack of ramen, and that pack of hot dogs will last you a couple of days.

    edit

    other fun foods that cost next to nothing

    rice
    pasta
    spam (well off brand spam)
    ground beef rolls (not the boxed packages)
    coucscous
    eggs
    green onions
    mushrooms
    mac n cheese
    milk (only to be used for cooking)

    Prices are going to be dependent on where you live and that area's Cost of Living. I spend about $30-40 a week on groceries for one person, and that's not even all my meals. Then again, I don't eat luxuriously, and I am not trying to make pennies stretch. I generally do shop generic brands, so it's a wonder that someone can live on $40 a month. Is that three meals a day? Amazing job Benthur, kudos indeed.

    Living on ramen sucks, and your health will suffer.

    I budget 2 meals a day, but some days you just really need more than that.

    sometimes i like to toss some squid into the frying pan with some pepper paste and green onions... mmmmmmmmm

    a bag of shredded squid will cost me $5-6 pending on how big of a bag I get, and i can stretch that for a couple days

    If you are doing any kind of manual labor, that's not enough.

    I did a few weeks of manual labor this summer (dug a large trench around the back end of my porch), and was just fine.

    edit

    Also, last summer I started jogging with my neighbor. We did 1.5 mile jog and a 1 mile walk three times a week, and was still just fine.

    That's not true. We don't like ABLE-bodied/minded people to cheat the system. We're all for helping someone who is truly desperate but we have seen WAY too many people steal from the system.
