Is there any use for his invention that isn't military?

May 15, 2008 -- A Swiss pilot strapped on a jet-powered wing and leaped from a plane Wednesday for the first public demonstration of the homemade device, turning figure eights and soaring high above the Alps.

Yves Rossy's performance in front of the world press capped five years of training and many more years of dreaming.

"This flight was absolutely excellent," the former fighter pilot and extreme sports enthusiast said after touching down on an airfield near the eastern shore of Lake Geneva.....

First of all that wasn't his first flight he has been doing this since 2006 at least
Second, I think this guy did it first:
    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-926587825785526870
but that it not a true hard wing but a wing suit.
Third, they still have not managed to defeat the take off and landing problems, when they can take off under their own power, fly around, and land without a parachute, then that will be something mind-exploding awesome!

Oh my favorite human "flying" video:

paragliding is a whole lot slower, but has better range, their a usually a speed to range ratio in unpowered "flying".

    Speed: slow to fast
    Paragliding
    Hang gliding
    sport parachute
    hard wing
    wingsuit
    free fall

    Range: long to short
Hang gliding (more efficient then paragliding, but can go faster)
    Paragliding
    hard wing
    sport parachute
    wingsuit
    free fall

Of course powered hard wings and wing suits sort of change all that, but they can only remain powered for a few minutes.

I agree, I don't know if it was clear that I was responding this ("Is there any use for his invention that isn't military?") question of Orleander though

exactly its useless for the military (except maybe the PLF, but israel could shot them down), its pure sport only.

If this could be used to get a man on the ground without a parachute, it could make an airbourne soldier a much harder target to hit in the air, as they could get on the ground faster (potentially). Maybe...

Maybe as a special ops insertion method? They jump out of the plane several miles from the target, fly in at relatively low altitude, then pop the chute over target. Don't know if it would have much advantage over HALO though. The jet engines would be making an aweful amount of noise near the target site.

There is a jetless version. The dude actually flew accross the channel with it...I assume it shows up on the rader as a big bird or not at all...

Yea, it's very practical as a military device..

I guess they can trash those cumbersome UAF's now..

Could it fly up and help a plane in distress?

If it could get high enough without the dude passing out, or using up all it's fuel.. no.

You're thinking jet liner. I'm thinking prop plane.

But those uh (what are they called ?) have a very limited fuel supply. At most for a couple of minutes.
Not to mention the danger of the props

Also, the guy controlling it can't take his hands off the controls or he'll drop out of the sky. lol
I believe they have controls in their jacket or something.
The wings of the device would be in the way anyway.

Look it can't take off or land, it useless! All it is is fun to fly.

If it could take off and land under its own power than maybe their would be some use.
