You know, R.E.M. was doing the whole indie rock thing before either the Lips or MM or whoever. And their new album sucks. Too bad, eh.
Pinback is one of my favorites.. I think it may be Indie, but I'm not sure. Check out their song "Offline P.K.," or "Bad Light." Muse is pretty fuckin' tight too.
pinback is one of my faves. they are great live. "music is made to be listened to, not talked about." - anton newcombe
A really awesome band is Iron & Wine. Totally unpretentious, accessible music. Kind of folksy, definitely melancholy, lo-fi and quiet. Our Endless Numbered Days is my favorite album of theirs. Excellent guitar.
Ever hear of Tad? They were a local Seattle group from the pre-grunge explosion (although they were still around during grunge as well.) They had a big fat fuck as lead singer and looked more like lumberjacks than a rock band. They had some good tunes though. The closest they came to fame was getting a spot on the Brainscan soundtrack (most people have probably never even heard of that movie either...) How about Mudhoney? Sweaty Nipples? Hey. Who here has heard Gay Bikers on Acid? (I've never actually heard them. Only of them...) Hmm. Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld? Nah. They sold out at Lollopalloloolooza. Who else? Too many local bands to remember half their names. The Mentors were a California group that I doubt many have heard of (except for perhaps mention of them in the lead singer supposedly being offered 10 grand by Courtney Love to kill Kurt Cobaine... He stepped in front of a train a few years back...) Most of my favorite bands are nationwide (even if only sold to a subgenre market). But, I've sort of dropped out of the whole music thing the past few years. Just too boring to interest me anymore. Just more bands.. Ho hum. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Ah. Sub-Pop. Nostalgia. Edit: Hey. I know. Anyone heard of Bach?
Man that is such a trip that you mentioned Tad. Boyle I think his last name is. Hes from Boise where I live. When I was in highschool we actually had a pretty decent punk scene here. Tad used to play drums for a local band called H-Hour that did almost all Gang of Four covers. They were one of my favorite bands locally! But Tad was hardcore drummer. He beat on his drums so goddamned hard that he used a thick plexi-glass screen all around the front of his kit to deaden the sound a little! I was disappointed when they left the sceen but I wasnt the least bit surprised to hear his name after he created Tad in seattle. ANd Mudhoney.. wasnt one of the Pearl Jam guys in that band?? I totally loved the music that came out of the grunge scene. Its the last music genre that really caught my interest at all. Ive always been a bigger fan of Bach (transcribed for classic guitar)than of anything modern. \ Peace
I could never get into Mudhoney. That whole grunge thing never did it for me. It was such a brief, episodic and poor movement anyway. HAHA we lagugh at grunge now. It's more dead than punk. I do like to wear a lot of flannel. They call me a lumberjack.
Yes that is a great album. Their last one (the difference...) is awesome also. One of the guys went on to do "shooting at unarmed men". Not bad but doesn't capture the same intensity.
Tad is great, I saw them in Vermont once. I have the album with the forbidden label on it (the subject of litigation), where the dude is grabbing his chick's tit. So-called "indie" bands are way too pop sounding for me.
Awesome thread Roman, really. The Smalls. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_RJtvJ5A1U&feature=related An old Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-_6iLE64Lo
Indie is on its way out. You've got to get in to Twee now. Check out Tullycraft http://www.last.fm/music/Tullycraft/_/Twee?autostart
Indie pop is OK. It's more cluttered pop-punk. The Smalls: I liked the old one, Payload. The other one, the singers sound too much like that crooning fuck from STP. I hate STP. Seriously Nirvana riffs though.
According to Wikipedia, twee is an Indie style--and not a particularly recent one: They go on to say: The singer in the band I used to be in cut a CD of his songs in his friend's basement, using all non-career musicians and even stopping the recording when the friend's wife got an important phone call. They used one of those computer-based recording systems and it came out perfect, ready for radio. He's sold about 200 copies and given away about 500. Then at the other extreme of career professionals who deliberately sound like a garage band, I give you the White Stripes. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Don't get me wrong, I love the White Stripes. I'm just illustrating the comment about blurring the line that used to define Indie.
I can't stand the Stripes. Meg White needs to learn how to drum. Or replace her with a drum machine. I prefer The Kills.
