I'm not trying to get into a theist v atheist thing here, this is strictly about atheism and an objective morality so don't get off topic please.
No, this has nothing to do with theism. I'm asking if an atheist can have an objective morality, that's all. What I'm mean is can you objectively say something is "right" or "wrong."
Well, yes, you can say something is objectively right or wrong. You only need to poll people. If 99% agree something is wrong, it probably is, most of the time. How objective do you want?
I wasn't under the impression that the majority opinion=objective truth. Can you logically deduce that certain morals are right and certain ones are wrong?
Yes, provided you have a starting point. From general principles, such as "The greatest happiness for the greatest number is good" (the basis of Utilitarianism, just one possible moral system), you can work out if particular acts are right or wrong through a process of logical reasoning.
So you can have an objective set of morals, but they have to be based on a subjective purpose like "The greatest happiness for the greatest number is good." Wouldn't your morals still be subjective in the sense that you base them on a subjective purpose? I mean I can say I like pizza and that's my purpose and I can also create objective morals behind that purpose. I've never taken even a basic philosophy class so forgive me if what I say is retarded.
It's not really a question of whether Atheists can have objective morals... it's more a question of whether objective morality actually exists. If you believe it can exist, only then can you (or should you) move on to determining whether a subset of people (e.g. atheists) can have them. Personally I don't think morals are objective in any way but are subjective in so far as they are determined (in a large way) by the society one is part of. Different societies can have different morals (e.g. is capital punishment right or wrong etc). Since I don't think they exist, I don't think atheists can have them. But the question of whether objective morals exist or not is somewhat different to the question you raised.
There is no such thing as objective morality. Morals are created, defined and enforced by people. Morality is relative.
Well, just to keep it simple. To Be objective is to simplify one self to an object, instead of a subjectiv person. Moral is based upon a general opionion from your network. Subjective is "what is good/bad for me". Objective is "what is good/bad for us". Any one on the planet nomatter race, gender or religious belive can have objective morality.
No. Yup, fitting in... No, subjective is "We/ I think/ believe this is good bad in and of itself" No, objective is this actually IS good/ bad regardless of what we/ I belive". No they can't, it's all based on belief/ thought/ prejudice.
No. Nobody can because morality doesn't exist outside the scope of human thought. All humans can and do, however, share common distinctions between 'right' and 'wrong' by evaluating human behavior against these two questions: 1) Is the person mean? 2) Is the person valuable?
