BEIJING - A southern Chinese province must stop the "shameful" and "cruel slaughter" of cats for food, a group of more than 40 animal lovers in Beijing said Thursday as they unfurled banners in a tearful protest.

Thousands of cats across the country have been caught in the past week by traders and transported to Guangdong province to be killed for food, said the protesters gathered at the Guangdong government's office in Beijing.

"We are very angry because the cats are being skinned and then cooked alive. We must make them correct this uncivilized behavior," said Wang Hongyao, who represented the group in submitting a letter to the Guangdong office.

    Wang Hongyao?
Isn't that the noise a cat makes when you start cooking it?

if that is the case then i would not become too attached to cats over there because it is unlikely to change. there can and should be be more humane ways of dong things so that should be the first goal.

I am not shocked about much of anything that comes my way relating to China. That place is ruled by some of the most ruthless and completely barbarous practices imaginable.

They have an absolute zero tolerance for just about anything they feel like. Their corporate business practices are basically, "do whatever you want as long as you pay the piper, just don't get caught. If you do, you're DEAD.

They have even less concern for the environment and sadly, they possess the most vast, rich, and completely unexplored rain forest on the planet.

What proof is there that the Cats are skinned alive and cooked alive?

All that is mentioned is a banner, and no other documentation is presented.

Besides cats taste like rabbit, rabbit, taste like chicken, and steak is still supreme, meat is meat.

    My favorite recipe is,

    Roast Cat with Wild Mushrooms
    shallots
    a few sprigs of parsley
2 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced
4 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves chopped
    2 fresh sage leaves, chopped
    6 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
2 tbsp plus 2 cups dry white wine
    1 rabbit
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 cups cat stock (made from the bones of your last roast cat)*
    1 cup fresh wild mushrooms

Chop herbs and soak in 2 tbsp of wine and 2 tbsp of oil to make marinade. Wash rabbit inside and out and pat dry, then season with salt and pepper, and pour marinade over it. Cover and set aside for two hours.

Peel and chop shallots and put into a large saucepan. Add remaining 2 cups wine and boil over high heat until reduced by a quarter (about 7 minutes). Add stock and simmer over medium-high heat until slightly syrupy (about 45 minutes). Set reduced stock aside.

Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms, season to taste with salt and pepper, and cook until soft (3–5 minutes). Add reduced stock and cook until sauce is velvety, stirring frequently (2–3 minutes). Keep sauce warm over low heat.

Scrape marinade off cat. Hang cat on spit and grill over medium-hot coals, turning often till well-cooked (25–40 minutes). Cut cat into pieces. Divide cat and sauce between 2–4 plates.

    * You may substitute chicken stock for cat stock if you desire.

The Chinese eat cats by preference, not necessity. It's not like they are over run with wild cats and eat those because it's the only game in town. These are domestic breeds of cat and China BTW has a HUGE agricultural scene and raises some of the most vast and diverse livestock on the planet.

Personally, I am not honestly offended if a person chooses to eat whatever. I am however GREATLY opposed to any unnecessary cruelty to animals whatsoever. That's OK though. China's cruelty to human beings is ten times worse than any imaginable cruelty to animals, whether eaten alive or not.

Actually there are a lot of Chinese who need to eat what ever meat they can get their mouths around.

And who said anything about eating cats alive?

Some banner said they were skinned and cooked alive, but I really doubt that.

Cat has also been eaten in Britain. During wartime rationing, cats found their way into "rabbit" stews/pies and hence earned themselves the nickname "roof-rabbit". With so many city strays and pets abandoned by bombed out families, cats were a substitute for rabbit. A former colleague whose father was in the butchery trade during that time told me that butchers sometimes kept cats as ratters; the cat later ended up being sold as "rabbit". The rationale was simple - a surplus of homeless cats living off of vermin, plus the fact that the supply of wild rabbit from the countryside had been suspended. The following rhyme summed up the keeping of cats in peace-time and the eating of them in times of hardship

Desperate times call for desperate measures?

Ironically, It's a supposed communist government, that allowed this.

Why? The Communist Governments have a long record of famine and starvation and cruelty.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Chinese_Famine

    The Black Book of Communism:

One such famine Soviet famine of 1932-1933, known in Ukraine as Holodomor killed more than six million Soviet citizens including 3 million Ukrainians

maybe not alive, but not completely dead either, fucker just laughed and hit it again..then dumped it into a pot full of hot water
    just fng disgusting

I watched this show a few weeks ago about the largest Chinese restaurant in the world. And yes, it is in China. And they were showing chef's in a competition of some sort at the restaurant where they took a live fish, dipped its body into boiling oil while the chef held the head out of the oil. As soon as its body was cooked, it was immediately placed on a plate and served. The trick to the dish is that the fish had to still be alive and moving when served. And the fish were alive and moving.. That was the delicacy of the dish. My father, who isn't squeamish about such things, gagged in revulsion and horror.

So it is quite possible that the cats are kept alive while they are skinned and then cooked. It is a cruel system if that is the case and highly inhumane.. to the cat and the fish.. But really unsurprising.

    Dude!:bugeye:

Don't they have butchers that sell regular meat where you live?

Thank you for pointing out the irony of this whole thing.

    ***WARNING***
    disgusting and disturbing post.

i seen a video of some diners where a live monkey was placed in a hole in the table and the eaters would be given a "mallet" type of thing.
the diners would then whack the live monkey on the head until its cranium cracked open after which the diners would eat the brains right out of the living monkeys skull.
i would never have believed it if i hadn't seen it.

Yea, I was trying to pull up a video from peta I saw a couple of years back.
It had people beating racoons, dogs, cats, bears etc. with clubs and throwing in the back of a truck, as well as hanging them through wire and skinning them alive.
