    Film: Watchmen

I went to see this last night and i want to say just how brilliant it actually was, it was amazing from start to finish, here is a bit about the film:

DO NOT CONTINUE TO READ IF YOU INTEND TO WATCH THE FILM
    Story
Watchmen is set in an alternate reality which closely mirrors the contemporary world of the 1980s. The primary point of divergence is the presence of superheroes. Their existence in this iteration of America is shown to have dramatically affected and altered the outcomes of real-world events such as the Vietnam War and the presidency of Richard Nixon.[16] In keeping with the realism of the series, although the costumed crime fighters of Watchmen are commonly called "superheroes", the only character who possesses obvious superhuman powers is Doctor Manhattan.[17] The existence of Doctor Manhattan has given the U.S. a strategic advantage over the Soviet Union, which has increased tensions between the two nations. Additionally, superheroes have become unpopular among the public, which has led to the passage of legislation in 1977 to outlaw them. While many of the heroes retired, Doctor Manhattan and the Comedian operate as government-sanctioned agents, and Rorschach continues to operate outside the law.[18]

    [edit] Plot
In October 1985, New York City police are investigating the murder of Edward Blake. With the police having no leads, costumed vigilante Rorschach decides to probe further. Discovering Blake to be the face behind The Comedian, a costumed hero employed by the United States government, Rorschach believes he has discovered a plot to eliminate costumed adventurers and sets about warning four of his retired comrades: Dan Dreiberg (formerly the second Nite Owl), the superpowered and emotionally detached Doctor Manhattan and his lover Laurie Juspeczyk (the second Silk Spectre), and Adrian Veidt (once the hero Ozymandias, and now a successful businessman, also known as the smartest man alive).

After Blake's funeral, Doctor Manhattan (Jon Osterman) is accused on national television of being the cause of cancer in friends and former colleagues. When the U.S. government takes the accusations seriously, Jon exiles himself to Mars. In doing so, he throws humanity into political turmoil, with the Soviet Union invading Afghanistan to capitalize on the perceived American weakness. Rorschach's paranoid beliefs appear vindicated when Adrian Veidt narrowly survives an assassination attempt, and Rorschach himself is framed for murder and imprisoned.

Jaded in her relationship, and no longer kept on retainer by the government, Juspeczyk stays with Dreiberg; they don their costumes and resume vigilante work as they grow closer together. With Dreiberg starting to believe some aspects of Rorschach's conspiracy theory, the pair take it upon themselves to free him from prison. Doctor Manhattan, after analyzing his own personal history, places the fate of his involvement with human affairs in Juspeczyk's hands. He teleports her to Mars to make the case for emotional investment. During the course of the argument, Juspeczyk is forced to come to terms with the fact that Blake, who once attempted to rape her mother, was her biological father. This discovery re-engages Doctor Manhattan's interest in humanity.

On Earth, Nite Owl and Rorschach continue to uncover the conspiracy surrounding the death of The Comedian and the accusations that drove Doctor Manhattan into exile. They discover evidence that Adrian Veidt may be behind the plan. Rorschach records his suspicions about Veidt in his journal, and mails it to a small New York publication. The pair then confront Veidt at his Antarctic retreat. Veidt explains his underlying plan is to save humanity from impending nuclear war between the United States and Soviet Union by faking an alien invasion in New York City, which will kill half the city's population. He hopes this will unite the nations against a perceived common enemy. He also reveals that he had killed The Comedian, arranged for Dr. Manhattan's past associates to contract cancer, and staged the attempt on his own life in order to place himself above suspicion, all in an attempt to prevent his plan from being exposed. Finding his logic callous and abhorrent, Dreiberg and Rorschach attempt to stop him but discover that Veidt has already enacted his plan.

When Doctor Manhattan and Juspeczyk arrive back on Earth, they are confronted by mass destruction and wide scale death in New York City. Doctor Manhattan notices his abilities are limited by tachyons emanating from the Antarctic, and the pair teleport there. They discover Veidt's involvement and confront him. Veidt shows everyone news broadcasts confirming the cessation of global hostilities, leading almost all present to agree that concealing the truth from the public is in the best interests of the world. Rorschach refuses to compromise and leaves, intent on revealing the truth. As he is making his way back, he is confronted by Manhattan. Rorschach tells Manhattan that Manhattan will have to kill him to stop him from exposing Veidt and his actions, and Manhattan responds by vaporizing the vigilante. Manhattan then wanders through the base and finds Veidt, who asks Manhattan if he did the right thing in the end. In response, Manhattan states that "Nothing ever ends" before leaving the Earth for a different galaxy. Dreiberg and Juspeczyk go into hiding under new identities and continue their romance. The story ends with the possible publication of Rorschach's journal, leaving open the potential for Veidt's plan to be exposed

Saw the movie last weekend, it was extremely good. One of the best movies I've ever seen.
The only things that really bugged me about it were the scene where Ozymandias poisons the assassin, and the apparently ridiculous number of nukes. I may be wrong but Im pretty sure the soviets never had anywhere close to 51,000 nukes.

You are correct. Also, the USA never won the Vietnam War, there was never a scientist who was "transformed" in to a godlike being, there were no superhero like people who dressed up in costumes, the Tachyon has never been discovered scientifically, Nixon didn't win multiple terms all the way into the 80's and most importantly the USA never had troops on the Aftghan border (I think in the graphic novel, they were stationed in Iran in which the Shah never fell due to direct US intervention). A lot is lost in the interceding decade where we have moved on from these issues.

The reason why it was so important to the graphic novel that the Soviets had invested so heavily in nukes is that Dr. Manhattan utterly neutralized any enemy, no matter how big and the Soviets were left as a second rate adversary with no real influence in the world. His ability to transcended space and time when coupled with his ability to alter matter at will, made the Soviets believe that they needed even MORE nukes. Enough so that no matter how great Dr. Manhattan's powers were, at least a small percentage would get through. They were, in effect, trying to neutralize Manhattan's advantage to the west. This was mentioned briefly in the movie, but easily overlooked and easily lost as minutia.

Oh: I saw the movie and loved it too!

It wasn’t a great movie, but I think it is the best superhero movie that was ever made. I was never a big fan of the superhero genre. I was watching R-rated movies from the time I was 5 years old. That is probably why the childish fantasy worlds of Spiderman and Superman never appealed to me. The Watchmen is a movie that “comic book hating” adults like myself can enjoy. Nothing is black and white in this movie. The heroes are the villains, and the villains are the heroes. I would love to see a movie that is based on the Rorschach character. I think he is a better version of the Punisher.

No. My boyfriend's is pretty substantial, so it takes a lot to impress me. Blue or not.

Besides, if I liked movies for the kinky stuff then I'd watch porn all day.

As far as I was aware the US constitution prohibits any one person from being elected the US president more than twice.
Plus I found the ending at least a little unlikely.

UK film fans wowed by Watchmen

Superhero film Watchmen has leapt straight to the top of the UK and Ireland box office.

The comic book adaptation, about a team of flawed superheroes, knocked Slumdog Millionaire off the top slot, after taking £3.2m in its opening weekend.

In third place was Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino, at number four was computer-animated film Bolt and Confessions of a Shopaholic was fifth.

The only other new release in the top 10 was The Young Victoria.

The movie, starring Emily Blunt as Queen Victoria, made its debut in sixth place after taking £928,307 in its first weekend.

Horror movie The Unborn fell four places to number seven and family comedy Hotel For Dogs followed in eighth place.

In its second week of release, Clive Owen's movie The International was in ninth place and romantic comedy He's Just Not That Into You rounded off the top 10.

Entropy, how can you continuously miss this point: THEY REWROTE HISTORY. The author of the novel removed that historical blip (ratified after Roosavelt). The entire point of that historical flashback was to show what wasn't history anymore.

LOL, indeed, that did seem a tad unusual.

Ah, well the movie doesn't really make it clear at what point their history diverges from ours and (not being an American) I'm not familiar with when particular US Laws were passed.
