A simple question. Is the USA a religious state? There is a lot of talk about "Islamic nations" and all. Is the USA a "Christian nation"?
It depends in which circle you are in. In most reputable universities gods of any kind are a big no no. The president is inaugerated with one hand on the bible however. No matter what no major religion is banned and discrimination of any is discouraged with the force of law.
The USA is a secular democracy. Right now, the Christian right has a big influence on policy, though, and that's not necessarily a good thing.
Gotta admit your right, James. I combat that here at home just as I combat anti american sentiment on the net.
I think so. There's prayers at the begining of every Congress session, swear on the Bible in our courts, not to mention historical stuff, like the Constitution and the Pledge, etc. I think that if you look for it, the Christian State is there, but if you aren't looking, you really won't find it. It's not blatantly obvious..
i say yes because of the "pleage of alegance" but as far as i knew the oath given in a court is given on the holy book of the paticula witness faith ie the koran for muslims, and the 10 scrolls for a jew because its an oath to bind the paticular person
Religious in what sense? Does the church control the government? I don't think so. Is our government and nation influenced by religion? Isn't the entire world influenced also? Conclusion, we aren't a religious state, that's absurd. Church, science, and state have been separated a long time ago. The church is losing it's power.
Well, understanding “Religion” as the need for faith. I believe that “Yes” US is a religious state. Our society is world known for its hunger in the need to believe. No other country in the world has as many religions and sects as we do in our land. Peculiar is that most “questionable” sects seem to flourish mostly in economically handicapped regions. I guess, in general terms. We are just a very weak and insecure society, and if fulfilling one religion deeds is too difficult, we just switch to a different one in the search for high-yield miracles, in search for the one that will provide higher investment returns with the lowest effort.
And of course the idiot half asleep drones who answer no will be either thiest christians or just plain stupid. Faith based initiative, prayer in cabinet meetings, no problem here.
The billionaires in charge merely wrap their programs in the bible and/or flag. They believe in neither...and if they do they are hypocrits.
Yea. As long as you have people reciting that you are a nation under God, then yes you are a religious state. Obviously you'd have to be, if you were a secular state you'd simply say you were one nation under the blue sky. Although reciting words doesn't neccessarily make you a religious state, it could just mean you are trying your hand at acting.
It shure as hell is, may god bless us and our soldiers and the nation, blablabla that stuff. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! I hate this make believe! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Yep. It's not supposed to be. But George W. Bush has changed all that. Although, "religious" is too broad a term. Fundamentalist Christian would be more correct. Check out some of the histories of George Bush and his cabinet. These guys are in as much of a "holy war" as Osama bin Laden or Saddaam Hussein or Hamas (just to name a few) EVER were. And we've all seen what religious fanaticism creates.......lots and lots of violence. And......... hmmm I can't think of anything else it creates. Funny that.
About the whole taking oath on the Bible thing in court: I had asked my US government teacher once what would they do for an atheist..he said they would just ask the person to "swear to tell the truth". But how can that be? A swear doesnt mean much if it isn't swore on something. I then asked if they would let the Atheist swear on our Constitution if he wanted, he said "no you can't swear on the Constitution." I don't understand that. The Constitution i something i wouldnt mind swearing on..oh well, i guess next time i'm in court as a witness i could lie because they'd ask me to just "swear to tell the truth" HA!
