    Dear Mr.President,

    Patriotic retirement:

    There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force;

    pay them $1 million a piece severance with stipulations:

    1) They leave their jobs. Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed.

    2) They buy NEW American cars. Forty million cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed.

    3) They either buy a house or pay off their mortgage- Housing Crisis fixed.

    All this and it's still cheaper than the "bailout".

    Nice idea, but ....

    Don't you think that next year there's going to be forty million more people turning 50, won't they be expecting their $million bailout? ...and the following year? ...and the year following that?

    Bad idea. First, that is governemnt intervention, which I am ardently against

    But on a more practical note, that would cause inflation; giving people a million bucks makes having a million bucks pointless.

    If the government gave everyone a billion dollars, then being a billionaire means nothing, and neither does the money.

    Now, I know you are only talking of 50+ people, but that's still a huge chunk of the demographic

    There are 40 million people that are above the age of 50 (so, between 50 and dead). There are not 40 million people that are 50, and there certainly isn't 40 million people that are 49.

    What did the automaker bailout set the taxpayers back? Billions? Or the AIG bailout? $85 billion?

    I'm sure there's some reason why this won't work, but it seems like a cheaper gamble than the other bailouts already in the works.

    Bailouts are just plain stupid. The debt incurred by businesses you had nothing to do with is on your hands and in your lap to pay for.

    Plausible in theory, but a terrible idea in practice.
