Looking at some of the stances that people post, I wonder whether they really mean what they say, or not.

Do you actually hold the stances that you present at Sciforums?
Or do you just argue some line of argument for rhetorical purposes?

I generally represent my viewpoints as they are in real life.. yes..
but sometimes I will go in the opposite direction if I feel whimsical.

Yes my views held here are the same ones I express in real time. Though admittedly sometimes I go over the top to make a point or just piss someone off.

    Re-done it.
It worked when I first posted it though.

Yeah but when someone just makes the stupidest outlandishest statement about...anything, it's kinda hard not to hand them a bit of condescention for saying something stupid.

And yes, I take every stance I take on here, in real life as well.

    Mostly, yes

For the most part yes. The greatest deviations are sarcasm and irony, which so frequently are missed that there's really no point.

A lot of folks try to hide behind "Devil's Advocate", except that's not what they're actually doing.

In truth, I have a short list of members that I really believe cannot possibly be as stupid as they represent themselves, which is part of the reason I find them so disgusting. Maybe they really do hold those basic political ideas, but their presentation is obvious bullshit.

Yes, but I don't necessarily explain myself well on every post.

That's why I can't stand intelligent women who play dumb. There is no good reason to be playing dumb.

I hold the stances i take here and IRL. I just tend to show opposite opinions to some people who seem not to notice them.

In some circles you'll have to, or you'll be an outcast pretty quickly.

some would argue that it's not worth being in the circles that you'd have to play dumb in. But if i've seen enmos playing dumb, then i must be really dumb. haha i've never heard you say anything that didn't make me think.

That's one of the reasons i don't button down my stance at sci. It's better to learn both sides than to just hear five or six people argue one point with each other.

Sometimes you'll have no choice. Take the workplace for example, or family.
Unless you don't mind being branded and treated as a Mr. Know-it-all you'll have to play dumb (I include not correcting people and just keeping your mouth shut in that).

oh of course. i was thinking more not including full knowledge on a subject that you're asked about. Like asking Einstein of General Relativity and him going, "Oh it's just time travel of sorts" or something basically not worth saying

Needy people who are insecure are the only ones that really need to/worry about fitting in.
When you have people like me who don't give a shit about what other people think and spend most of their time by themselves, or with pets, there is no playing stupid.
Besides, anyone who outcasts me, just more or less sealed his/her fate, as that would give me exponentially more reason to inscessantly harrass them.

I work in IT. We are by default branded know-it-alls.
You can be intelligent, not play dumb and still be accepted into a group.
It's when you start acting condescending, correcting everyone and just having that 'I'm better than everyone else' 'tude, that's when you would get outcast.
