Keep an eye for the sales paper at your grocery shop. I always get really good deals, like buy one get one free pot roast last week, shrimp the week before, chicken the week before...
As to the OP, my initial concern is that you are not getting enough nutrition from eating out for any extended period of time. A high salt/high sugar/no fiber/no nutritional value diet is not healthy. It is cheaper and healthier to eat in instead of eating out. It just is- I am not going to bore everyone explaining how to correctly shop in a supermarket, but from what I see from other shoppers' wagons I am apparently in the minority. I think American culture lost something when the 99 cent menu was invented- how many of you know how to make meatloaf? A turkey? How many of you know how to grill a steak?
I work with two guys who live exclusively on a diet of coffee, cigarettes and beer. It doesn't work. One of them (40yrs old) broke his hip walking into a bike rack.
Tch, I said coffee and cigarettes (beer is okay), but bike racks are a bad addition to anyone's diet... And in case anyone is wondering, avoid trying to ingest high-speed vehicles as well.
to an extent he is correct. subway veggie delight and veggie patty is probably cheaper than he can replicate at home and is a good deal.
Back to the OP - fast food is terrible for you. So what if you save a few bucks and hours, you'll lose many years of life. If you want to eat cheap & healthy, forget mac and chees or ramen. Learn the cuisine of the third world - rice, beans, spices, stir fries, root vegetables (carrots potatoes beets parsnips,) and if you want some extra protein kill a wild animal. Healthy and delicious. Stews are cheap and easy. Eat like the Asians and latin Americans.
Rice isn't better than the other stuff. It's just calories and carbs. That's all. And I don't know many skinny Mexicans.
Mexico is a tiny portion of latin America and IMO not the best example. And I agree about the white rice, but it's certainly better than Ramen or kraft dinner and just as cheap.. You can always replace it with brown/wild rice or quinoa.
Varda's suggestion for BOGO deals is a good one. A friend recently got 5 kg rice free with 5 kg purchase at Shoprite [this is a South African company, so don't look for it in the US! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!]. I aslo recommend buying dry produce in quantity, but only if you take the trouble to store it properly. I use a lot of ginger, garlic and green chillies, so I buy them in quantity on sale and toss them in the freezer. I also buy rice, sugar, tea, flour and lentils in quantity. Lentils are an excellent meal if you invest in a pressure cooker. Or, get a crockpot where you can toss everything in and come back to it hours later. You can also join farmers groups for meat, milk and eggs. Not only is it healthier to buy directly from the farmer but you also get better deals on the price. Above all, don't compromise on your health for money. You will regret it.
I disagree- the veggie delight is devoid of protien altogether... it's empty calories. And the veggie patty is $6.50 last time I checked... it's not part of the $5.00 footlong promotion. For $6.50 I can buy 8 Vegan burgers plus buns and feed myself lunch for a week...
Brown rice is 'good', but of course it shouldn't become the staple of your diet. Make sure you get at least one serving of meat a day. For cheapness, you could just buy the sunkist tuna packs
i could ALMOST agree that if you are single then eating out can be cheaper (but not nescessarliy better for you) however when your cooking for 6 people every day, then home made cooking is cheaper, for example i can do a cheese and pasta bake for 6 people and it costs me very little. pasta: £1 (roughly) tinned tomatoes: 50p cheese: £2.00 thats just £3.50 for a healthy meal, if we went out to eat then it would cost us about £40 so i think eating at home is cheaper
I sometimnes catch my own fish to eat. That saves a bundle during the year sp if you can catch your own food you too can save allot. It also tastes much better. I usually spear fish so there's no cost involved exceprt the spear gun which I bought over 20 years ago and a mask and snorkle. Fishing also is easy and can be fun as well but you'll need more gear to get the big ones.
recipe for "why would anyone care if it bothers you? find a different thread you knob". ingredients: on topic posts method: post them
yeah but you can't allways do that in some places, i think i would get arrested if i went a speared fish around here, even fishing isnt really done here, (there are sea fishers but that is only certain times of the year)
