the one child policy does make abortion rates in china concerning though. For instance the ratio of males to females is already serverly squed because of female infantside to the point that men are leaving china to find wives (aparently the same thing is happerning in easten europe but in that case its because of the mail order brides which is much less sinister). Do we really want to get to a point where its ok to kill off female fetuses (ok its better to abort than murder the baby but still) and you are left with a population of only men?

That is delibratly looking at the issue in a clinical way but being clinical is sometimes the only way to explain things to some people around here

Is this just one more of many instances where "we" try to tell other nations how to live, what to believe and what to do?

Won't "we" ever get tired of trying to force our will onto others? Or is that just part of being human?

The bolded part also helps reduce the population.

The original post had no intention of debating the male/female ratio, nor did the news clipping. Instead it was based more on young women who could have prevented it with contraceptive.

"Government statistics show that about 62 percent of the women who have abortions are aged between 20 and 29, and most are single." -CNN

The slated statistics were to show that young Chinese citizens did not use contraceptives, but instead are using abortions as a means to do so. Like the original post, and yours, it's akin to a 'shock' measure against another culture. Again, with the statistics I have pulled up from BBC, the ratio from abortions to overall population show that, while it is indeed larger than other nations, it is not as over excessive as it appears. 13 million does indeed gulf US's 800,000, but so does China's 1.3 billion population vs the US's 300 million.

That's not to say, of course, that China's one child policy and gender imbalance is not included at all. I am aware of that situation, but it is probably (much) less than 30% of all abortions and concentrated mainly in the countryside. The central government tried to address the situation by offering benefits for families with a girl, and a second child if the first is a girl. You have to be aware that China is split between two classes: the prosperous eastern coast (that has education) and the relatively impoverish countryside, people who still rely more on the male child tot ake care of them.

That's not to say that there is no female/male ratio imbalance due to the one child policy. I am aware of that situation, but that is probably (much) less than 30% of all abortions. The central government has tried to address it by offering benefits for girls and a second child if the first is female (applied to the countryside). You have to be aware that China is split between two class: The prosperous and educated eastern coast and the impoverished countryside relies heavily more for a male child to take care of them as they get older.
