okay, I have an idea for a video game.
It's going to be a WWII game (very original, I know, but hold on) played from the perspective of a german soldier!
It will be Call of Duty-esque, and Austria/Poland will be the tutorial levels

Not Austria/Poland, though. An early German campaign start? Could be different.

Moot for me. Can barely even run COD.

You should write this as a custom module for an existing game.

I would only play it if you could pick an SS Soldier as a choice of charactor.

I'd play it if I wasn't tired of WWII games, I don't know what's with game developers and WWII. Every RTS that comes out now is about WWII and it pisses me off, where are all the WWI games? As a FPS I can understand WWI would be a bad theme because of limited weapons choice but there shouldn't be a problem for strategy games. I wanna to reenact Battle of Ypres or the Somme and see people die in muddy fields full of barb wire, fuck!

Besides that I think a change in side would be a good idea for once, I always thought it sucked COD didn't make a campaign as the Axis side.

The market has enough games based on the second world war. Games based on fictional wars have more room for creative direction with regard to the sequence of events. However, with that said, I would still play a game (like yours perhaps) if it included the depth and realism expected of war. Portray the grim reality of young men sent to kill or be killed. Make the characters and their interactions real. Make it a point to show the emotional conflict and the destruction, and it may actually be a realistic game. Oh, and for fuck's sake, if they are in the Nazi army, make most of the dialogue in German! Put some subtitles in it, and if they have to speak English, make it properly accented, perhaps even a bit broken. The COD games thus far have single-player campaigns that are far too scripted and dull to be realistic, not to mention that the characters are as deep as a papercut.

The problem that has plagued people with that idea since the dawn of time, is how do you play a losing battle?

ie, your at normandy, you kill every us and allied soldier, than game says "you lost normandy, fall back" even though you killed all the allies.

Essentially you have to make it unwinable, and people hate games that are unwinnable.

Not to burst your bubble but, Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood had levels in which you play as a German. I actually think it would be cool for a WW1 game. Trenchs, chemicals, artillery barrages, and a lot of melee combat.

Are there any games based around the Afrika Korps (besides the board game)?
I think that would have been a fun campaign to play........until Rommel loses that is.

Yes, There is actually one that pits the Desert Rats against Afrika Korps.

The reason for so many WWII games is because WWII was known to be the first war with so much footage and information available. Most of the archives are old enough not to warrant costs in regards to royalties and any information that was held secret at that period of time is more than likely public now.

There are a number of games that do take the German perspective, however it can be seen as taboo.

There are way too many games centred around warfare, it makes me think that we'll never grow out of that frame of mind.

Rommel didn't lose... as I recall he helped plan the assassination of Hitler, and was executed then replaced. That guy lost.

i dont see it as taboo and i have played games where you can pick sides. i think that game (COD) was more of a cinematic type of experience and to incorporate both perspectives for play would be like developing two games and take much more time.

from a strategic point you can play as either side. i think quite a few years ago microsoft put out a real cool game where you can play either the allied or axis side. cant remember the name.

Uniforms? So narrow minded that was.(No offense) It would be made up for by all the cool graphics of artillery, tanks, and bloody melee combat!

"Panzer Commander" handled this wonderfully with fantasy scenarios like "Sea Lion" and invading D.C in 45, if you won every campaign for germany(Poland to lowlands to England to moscow to U.S) with a few variations like you could go to afrika instead of russia, but eventually you had to go to russia.
