I think the style actually is inspired from jail....where they take away your shoelaces and belt....but I could be wrong.

Most jails have jumpsuits and those that don't have elastic waistbands.

What part of it do you see as frailty?

Much of the humour seems to be addressed at those who are overweight, if a size zero was wearing many of these outfits I doubt they would be seen as inappropriate.

So really, its a kind of preconception about what fat asthetics are.

To the other, I find it a fascinating look at body image consciousness. It seems some people can become unselfconscious about the way they look or perhaps are extremely conscious about it under some circumstances. Even what they wear, like this lady here

seems to imply that she is trying very hard to seek attention. These are people who feel invisible.

    Nope. Keep trying.

    Putting it to rest?
What does my telling you what I experienced when this fad was taking root back in the early 80's have to do with anything you are talking about?

Are you are trying to spread this bullshit meme about gay prostitutes to try and convince stupid little gangsta boys to pull their pants up?

    This and that

I'm just curious why you guys are so focused on the blacks.

To the one, I always figured the trend was some sort of invitation to hop on and hump away. To the other, that can't possibly be, since there's very little that is less attractive.

If I say these people aren't healthy, either mentally or physically, does that qualify as self-evident?

Certainly I could start pulling from various medical and psychological journals, but in truth, I'm not sure where to start.

I mean, sure the "Neapolitan Pimp" is kind of funny, but it's also kind of cool; if only it wasn't pink and white, I might want to know where I could get one of those. Perhaps in black and autumn gold, and in an opposing arrangement. And some of seems benign. Like the "Holy Cat Lady" (is that a little girl wandering around Wal-Mart with wet pants in the background?) or the "John Deere Cavalier", but even that latter reflects a degree of obsession that is, simply put, deviant, and in the case of the former, I'm simply presuming it's not all for cats. (Cat litter works great for motor oil spilled on the garage floor.)

While I might theorize any number of conditions to describe the "Walking Condom", it suggests someone facing their insecurities a little too ferociously. And that is problematic. Not necessarily for anyone else, but there is unquestionably some sort of suffering afoot. That is one loud expression of the self.

I don't disagree that some of it is intriguing. And not all of it reflects general or specific illness. Some of it does, in fact, reflect genuine eccentricity. And some of it simply suggests poor fashion sense. Or, perhaps, simple apathetic sloth.

Nor do I disagree that there is sociological value in what we might call the "Wal-Mart phenomenon". But any genuine inquiry or examination simply cannot start with a derisive proposition. As you suggest, much of the humor seems to be addressed at overweight people. These are not going to be shamed into health. And again, as you suggest:

"Even what they wear, like this lady here ... seems to imply that she is trying very hard to seek attention. These are people who feel invisible."

I don't disagree. But that need results from a lack. And that lack means sadness. If we laugh, are we laughing at the sadness?

I don't know what to think of the cockmaster bumper stickers. Jesus wept? No. Jesus probably looked at his Daddy and said, "You know this is your fault, right?"

Even if we presume mercifully—maybe this is all they really have; they're shopping Wal-Mart, after all—it's still problematic.

View these links at your own risk

    • The caption reads, "Create your own caption. I'm in the middle of pouring bleach into my eyes." And yes, I made a similar joke earlier. But look beyond the self-expression, at the motivations of the statement.

    Oh, by the Goddess ....

    • Okay, I laughed, but that's because I haven't encountered the colloquialism "she-wolf" in years, and the last time I did I'm pretty sure it was from a truly flaming queer.

    • What am I supposed to say?

    • I mean, really.

There is some genuinely funny stuff in there, but it involves things like assless carcass, imported products with illiterate packaging, or even bovine limousines. If I actually witnessed a goat wandering through a Wal-Mart, yes, I would laugh. But what am I supposed to say about ... I mean, I don't even know how to describe some of it. I mean, sure it's easy enough to say something like, "old man with large breast implants", but come on—now that you got 'em, learn how to respect 'em. (It's so absurd I almost hope to have such courage when I'm his age.)

It's easy to laugh at the superficial, but what is the human process taking place beneath the surface?

We aren't laughing in the face of the tragic. Rather, we are mocking those who suffer. If we take the sociological perspective, what are we going to find? In many of these cases, and especially the ones people seem to laugh at most, we see poverty, mental and physical illness, and desperate sadness. One of the testaments that would arise from using this site as a sociological tool would be the state of those who laugh at what. And, frankly, I think that would actually be a valuable insight.

Kiss,kiss. chow, babe.)

God, it just hit me, that I'm one of these walmart freaks.

What would say mentally or physically healthy to you?

Some of these guys, for example, are pretty sharp.

    Paradigm conflict

I believe in this case you're asking me to assess one cultural paradigm according to the prevailing customs of another. I might as well be Kathy Bates in the film version of Matthiessen's At Play in the Fields of the Lord, fitting young tribal girls for brassieres.

I have no basis for presuming mental or physical dysfunction in those men according to my American outlook.

To the other, consider the large woman in the purple Orleander posted. Is that her belly or her mons hanging down, there?

Of the images I posted, the very gay looking gentleman appears to be overcompensating for gender identity insecurity. The bearded chap in the red floral shirt shows signs of substance use, perhaps simply a lifetime of cigarettes and booze, and the sloth of his attire suggests the possibility of psychological dysfunction.

And, of course, the "wigger" I quizzed Draqon and CF about is just stupid.

to be fair, millions of people go to wal mart every day so some will go across the grain. go to a truck stop at around 2-4am for some real interesting people.

Actually, go anywhere where there are people, and you will see some weirdos.

But why does everyone care so much, anyway? It's just people living their lives.

that site has me thinking that you need permission to use peoples images. that is what i always thought.

i know if someone complains they would have to take the image down but still i was made to understand that someone has to sign a release agreeing to their image being used. and that site is a commercial venture.
