What's your country's anthem?

You wake up one morning as the emperor of the greatest nation that the world has ever beheld, and find that because of one reason or another an anthem is required for patriotic purposes. Since the celebration of your nation's independence is coming up, you have to choose an already-written song. What's your choice?

I go for either the Blue Danube by Strauss, the Imperial March by John Williams, or selected sections of Poeme, by Ernest Chausson (look for this one, it's just amazing, on a cd by the violinist Joshua Bell with the same title).

Fell in Love With a Girl by The White Stripes. All of my people would be bombed by Bush, because we have oil.

Confutatis from Mozart's Requiem (nice one: I rule with the flames of hell), a Shostakovich symphony (I can't remeber what it's called. and it would be seriously condensed), or that song that they play on movies when something satanic is happening (it's got a choir singing in Latin or something. Antichrist music).

I love that dark classical stuff. And I love me some Shosty; he has some really powerful Russian, "feel the pain of mother Russia" (with thick accent) kind of sound.

    Jose, can you see?

"Jose, can you see?" It's a childhood joke about the National Anthem.

The Star-Spangled Banner actually has some four verses, but nobody actually knows them all. The song you hear at the beginning of baseball games is only the first verse.

With a nod to Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., though, I will note that perhaps one sentence in that verse is not a question. Seriously, watch this; I'm cutting it according to sentences, not according to common stanza division:
Now, I don't know about you, but standing alone, this anthem just doesn't seem that self-assured. If you wish to drudge through the other three morbid verses, look it up in Google, because the link I'm providing (click here) comes with a soundtrack. How evil is that?

I don't mind war during baseball season quite as much. It gives me something to think about during the anthem. And in Seattle ... whoa. Every once in a while we get a good performance. But I am so sick of hearing people who can't sing the anthem, and I am so sick also of "soul renditions" which contain extraneous vocalizations.

A note if you're at an American sporting event: It is appropriate, apparently, as the habit will reveal itself, to begin cheering and stomping and making all sorts of noise, at the word "wave" in the final line, although waiting until the "and" is more common. But Americans will simply not shut up for the duration of that song.

As the Simpsons joke has it: "Due to popular demand, we will skip the national anthem."

I admit it: the song annoys the hell out of me.

    :m:,

    Tiassa,

Although you may loathe our national anthem, as far as I can tell you haven't selected one for the country you control. And yes, I agree...ours certainly has been mutilated by various pop stars and the like, I never enjoy hearing it. I think they made us sing it or something like it every morning back when I lived in NYC, maybe that was just the pledge of allegiance...

    MARS- BRINGER OF WAR!

I would have to agree with Mars, bringer of war (by Gustav Holst). That is like the coolest song in the world. Or, if I had the chance, i would have the war chant that the FSU seminoles do. That thing is fuckin awesome. But overall, I think that Mars is the winner. Oh Uberdragon, were you there last year in band when we watched that movie, and it had that asian guy who did the weird ass humming/whistling with his mouth? I would have that guy do some nasty song, if I had the chance.

I guess that would be Wilhelmus van Oranje Nassau (Dutch).
My personal anthem would be either the russian, and a song from Gladiator (song The Battle, don't think thats the theme though)...although...Vangelis Pappathanassiou has some great songs as well...(chariots of fire, conquest of paradise)....AAARGH DONT ASK ME FOR WHAT MUSIC I LIKE!!!

The Imperial Anthem of Fimelja is Chopsticks, which in fact was written here. Of course, we call it Entem Imbereil tei Fimelja, or just Entem Imteifi.

It actually has 3 different verses, and the original lyrics are in Fimelyan. The first verse tells of Button, and how he is reincarnated, and that his home is in Fimelja. The second verse tells of the Creation Orgy (Fimeljans believe that humans were created when the sun, the moon, the earth, and time all had a fantastic orgy. Supposedly, the first human, a genderless being, started as the semen of Time, inside Mother Earth, who then released it, and it split into man and woman). The third verse tells of the evils of war.
