Very tiny point on technicality, but mods don't need to reopen locked threads to post in them.

But yes, its slightly unethical to post in a locked thread as a poster rather than as a mod.

i do not see a problem with voicing my opinion on mod actions that pertain to me or the community at large.

    why do you?

    Brief notes

Just a quick note, Gustav, and attending S.A.M.'s point: I've said all I am going to say as far as criticizing my colleague for posting from behind the lock; I am much more interested in the more substantial issues.

It is entirely possible that he posted without noticing the lock. It's happened here before and, frankly, that oversight would actually fit a certain pattern about his behavior or perception that I've criticized in the past—apparently, he does regularly overlook certain small details. The lock icon is certainly small enough to escape his notice, and if he was posting from the middle of page three (of six; e.g., responding to #56), he reasonably could have misssed String's closure note at #102, especially if he composes in a text editor or other external application, instead of typing directly into the reply window. (And, as I specifically encourage this practice against browser crashes and accidental keystrokes wrecking people's posting efforts, I am certainly not going to complain about that.)

Indeed, the note at the outset of my splinter post also explains my reason for reviving a closed thread, which could—if one chose to pick nits—constitute a challenge to moderator authority.

Honestly, sir? I think part of the problem is that my colleagues do not necessarily understand you in context. Not that I always do successfully, but I'm also happy to lecture them on occasion.

I would, as such, remind you of the strange literalism that has infected even our allegedly enlightened factions around Sciforums. I find myself wondering, on occasion, how some of our neighbors read novels. (Or:"'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times'? Come on, Charlie, you can't have it both ways!")

For instance, I just put in my two cents on a discussion Geoff and Bells are having about the phrase, "protected species". I see a colloquial term in one's use of the phrase, while the other sees a literal dehumanization in the word "species".

Thus, it is not so much the idea of "a problem with voicing [your] opinion on mod actions" insofar as some of my colleagues have no idea how to interpret your method, so they take you literally in that curious context that consistently finds the greatest possible offense, and respond to that.

They are simply receiving you in the wrong context, and thus responding as negatively as one might expect.

    oh
since a locked thread appears to a mod as regular thread, i really see no other choice but to then give mad the benefit of the doubt as this is the only known incident of this nature.

thanks for the info, you two
    apologies to mad

    Not quite, but close enough

Well, it's really easy to miss.

I did it once, but under different circumstances; I was composing my reply at the same time a thread was locked and redirected to the Cesspool.

    Whoops.

But as long as a thread is in a moderator's jurisdiction, the system will give no warning, demand no confirmation, regarding the fact of posting in a locked thread. That little lock icon might be the only indication a moderator has, and under some circumstances, we might imagine it can easily be missed.

It's happened to me before. I posted in a thread in Human Science that was locked by someone in Admin as I was typing my response. My post appeared after it was locked.

    I deleted my post immediately.

well, children, what is the moral of this story? could it be that one need not bother hitting the report button on a mod in his jurisdiction? that severe penalties would be meted out if one does indeed choose to do so?

    yes

    Okay..

I'm going to post some advice here for all members. When you hit the report button, that report is sent automatically to the moderator of that particular sub-forum and to all of the administrators.

If you are going to report another poster, then hit the report button as that report will then go to the moderator and all of the administrators.

If, however, you are going to report a moderator, you can hit the report button, but it would probably be best to PM all of the Administrators directly with your complaint.

Having had a look through the thread in question and why he got the PM, it's not for me to say tbh. Paedophilia threads on this forum have had a very bad history and in the past, we have had members who expressed a very distinct desire to have sex with children and have admitted to being sexually attracted to children. In short, many such threads have tended to bring some paedophiles to this forum. Hence why they are so closely monitored. Having such posters puts this forum as a whole at risk legally. No one wants this forum to be a mecca for illegal activity, nor does anyone want this forum to support illegal activity. I don't think I need to explain the 'why's' to you.

Mordea, it seems, found Dwy's warning about this particular thread to be stupid in his own words. I suspect that the warning he was given by Dwy stemmed more from that. You'd need to ask the other moderators if they would have done the same thing.. I don't know what his report said and I don't know if anything was said in whisper. But really, calling a mod stupid for saying that he was going to be monitoring a very sensitive topic and one that can blow up in his face (as has blown up in all of our faces in the past)? What do you think Gustav?

    heh
mordea's point has nothing to do with pedophilia but with draq making 2 assertions which are charged by dwhatever to be unsubstantiated followed by dwhatever making another 2 assertions which are in turn are charged by mordea to be similarly unsubstantiated

mordea points out the hypocrisy and takes it upon himself to report the instance

    *bolding mine

to infer that it was the warning that irked mordea would involve some rather creative and fanciful conjecture. it is obvious he simply did not edit the quote to be more precise in his complaint.

you are one of us now, darling. perhaps some reasonable speculation?

This has already been addressed by some of my fellow mods, but just to clarify.

I didn't mean to flaunt String's closure of the above referenced thread. I had pulled up a list of my most recent posts and was responding to any responses they had generated. I didn't scroll down to the bottom of the thread and so never saw the little "locked" icon.

As has been mentioned, a mod can post in a closed thread and receives no notification that he's doing so beyond the little "lock" icon at the bottom of the thread.

    My apologies

I wish you could recognise a sense of humour.

Because that's all you do here.

Any mod actions that pertain to you must at this point relate to your following the mods around criticising every moderation action that they take, because that's all you do here.

While you might think of yourself as a self-appointed guardian of the little-guy members here, standing up for all that is good and right, you're really little more than a repetitive annoyance at this point.

What sciforums needs is good content - about science, politics, religion, etc. - not your obsessive meta-discussion and snide remarks.

Just a note: I have no issue with another mod opening a closed thread. In fact, I encourage it. Some threads need to be closed for just a little while to allow tempers to cool. In this case, why not open it.

As for the posting, I'm not offended even if you left it closed.

Reflecting on recent examples of "governance" here, lately, one can easily imagine this sort of loaded sociological experiment:

A working sub-forum is created in or near the Archives Section where posters are divided into two groups; a Control Group which we can call the "Control Oversight Group" and which is populated exclusively by Moderators and Administrators, who have all the rights and responsibilities and powers they normally do to ensure the fluency and integrity of operations of sciforums, and then the Experimental Group who we can label 'Critics Of Mods and Admin' which is comprised only of concerned other member posters in 'good standing' (unbanned) who retain all of their normal posting responsibilities and limited rights to settle ethical personal or procedural disputes from other Forum Sections.

The purpose of the experiment will be to ascertain if the present Democratic model of Governance is adequate to settle any grievances between Individual(s) of the COG group and any "Minority of individuals" of the C.O.M.A. group.

To ensure impartiality, the experiment will need to exclude any case where there are: (1) undefined disputes or unspecified problems, (2) unequal representation between parties, (3) insufficient public awareness, or (4) judicial bias and/or other factors.

Then the number of remaining coherent disputes settled by "public outrage sufficient to prompt ethical action from the COG group can be tallied" from the total Set of Disputes (minus those which were excluded for whatever reason), then the difference compared; and the ratios, percentages and probabilities evaluated in support of the Settlement Ad Populum (SAP) Model.

Is there is a statistically significant number of settled disputes or grievances here?

    ...

After considering the principles and practice and 'fitness' of the democratic hypothesis, the presumed availability of relative data, and chances of correcting any errors and proceeding, perhaps we might then name the experiment democratically.

If so, I hereby nominate the working title of "Sigh For Open Government"...

Because it may be the first most prevalent natural Human reaction.

Besides, it has a familiar ring to it.

    Thanks for participating
