Have you see the pictures of me that I've posted? I'm not the most tanable person. I've had numerous melanoma spots cut off my face, chest and back. I tend to avoid the sun at all costs.

And, WTF is with posting the name "Mitch Hedberg"?

It was a Mitch Hedberg joke, and he was a comedian who died young...

I figured it should be attributed to him, since I meant it as a joke...

Eyes are supposed to be myopic.
    Cavities rot teeth.
Cavities are a modern phenomenon. It's because the modern diet contains starch and sugars in excess.

People shouldn't fly or drive in metal cars with exploding gas fumes as a propelant.
    stop doing it then.

Hair turns grey. It also grows long, especially on most males' faces and female's arm pits.
    Nothing wrong with grey hair.

    People get fat.
Only if you don't get enough exercise. And when you reach old-age you tend to get thinner again.

Kids die of numerous virulent diseases.
I personally wouldn't compare battling a life threatening disease with uneasiness of self image. That reeks of some sort of psychological problem.

The elderly die of other diseases.

Once again, comparing bleaching teeth to disease is excessive.

I think the argument should more be about whether as a personality you can stand up against irrational social pressure. You may really think that you are your iPhone, and it is a common phenomenon in contemporary times, but I subsequently think it is my higher moral duty to point out the foolishness of it all.

I think it is time to drag Hitler now into the argument because this is an internet forum. Do you think you had any chance to stand up against Hitler with this attitude of yours, or would you be the first in line shouting for your fuhrer. Just remember before you think about a reply, Hitler was the bleaching of teeth of the 1930s. He represented the irrational solution to non-existing problems, which were confused with some other actual problems.

Which brings us back to bleaching which is defined exactly the same: an irrational solution to a non-existing problem.

    Ouch.

    I don't think I'll try that.

What about people who INDUCE life threatening conditions via their uneasiness of self image? (ie anorexia)

Says the guy with hideous yellow teeth.

Are you telling me that you don't do anything to make yourself more attractive? What are the limits to which you are willing to go?

When you say "non existing problem" you are acting out of a fair amount of solipsism. You've decided it isn't' a problem, but reasonably speaking, most--if not all--of our problems are of our own doing and are based on our unique (societally imposed) perceptions, ergo, it's all relative to the world you live in.

The fact that my company is typically image obsessed and requires me to be well groomed (no tattoos, piercings), of a "healthy" body weight and physique (i.e. white teeth, trim waistline) and in possession of a professional gender-appropriate personal image (contemporary grooming, not too effeminate), means that, it is indeed a real problem, especially because this is the standard for ALL major corporations and is my sole source of income.

Sure, sure, I could have gotten a job elsewhere, but regardless of the many options, it's still a "real" problem and the solution to it completely rational, especially so when one compares the cost (in terms of physical pain [significantly less pain than the daily "job stress" that the career brings] and actual cost when compared to the paycheck I draw). All in all, a small trade off.

Jesus. Why shouldn't someone bleach their teeth if they want?

Is it an 'irrational solution to a non-existent problem' that I have earrings, or a lip ring?

    Nope.

People who try to place "values" on individual human choices--especially those that neither harm nor help--by deducing everything down to that which is only necessary to human life miss out on a hell of a lot of individual aesthetics that make life worth living.

What's the point of being alive if you're going to reject pleasure and indulgence and self expression, and allow yourself only those things you need to not die?

I can get into the pleasure and self expression...but bleaching your teeth will make them permanently more sensitive. At 60, this can be troublesome.

For the future, String, think "Sensodyne". It helps with the sensitivity.

Good to see that you are still at it, VI.

You have already had numerous bouts with melanoma? Are you talking about premalignant lesions or actual, malignant melanomas? Because that bodes very badly for you in the future. And since you are bald, wear a hat when you go outside.

If so, then make a paste with the baking soda and peroxide and brush your teeth with it a few times a week. It *should* whiten your teeth, and leave them bright and shiney.

    Yes, yes and DUH!

I don't go out in the sun.

I literally have a regimen that annoys those around me. I slather SPF 1,000,000 on when I go out and I have a rimmed hat (sort of like a cowboy hat) that I wear out on sunny days. Long sleeve shirts when I'm out and about in the summer (light ones, but still long sleeved shirts).

We're still a bit suspicious of people with perfect-looking teeth, as though they're going to sell you something. To achieve teeth which are far better than anything nature intended, you need more than a brush, toothpaste, floss or, perhaps, home bleaching. What you need is a great deal of money.

If a Martian walked through the door right now wanting to know about Earthman's habits, I'd need some time to explain why tanning is popular, even among white supremacists. It requires more time and Factor Infinity than most of us have, and you need to be somewhere outside the UK. No man I know would be seen entering a tanning salon, though.

Technically, Gavin Henson uses fake tan. By the bucket load. Don't ask me how I know.
