This report (15 people) turned out to be bogus.

It sounds like at some stage during the early morning rescuers were in contact with a group of 15 survivors in the CTV building, but contact was subsequently lost.

I am also from NZ. Fortunately for me, I live in the far north, which is the most geologically stable part of the country. However, we have friends in Christchurch and are still waiting to hear from most of them. One we know about survived but with a broken leg.

I phoned the place of work of a couple of other friends but got just an answerphone message. Definitely a worry.

    I'm a Dunedinite.

Also have friends and family in Christchurch caught up in all of this, but gladly, I've heard from mine, I hope you hear from yours soon.

113 reported dead at lunchtime today. I'm in Northland NZ (that's up north of Auckland, not the Christchurch suburb of Northlands, BTW). Thousands of people are heading out of the city to stay with relatives either in the South or North Islands.

I'd just like to reiterate my sympathies and good wishes for the poor blighters down under. We have a lot of NZ folks in England, and all of them that I've met have been proper, decent people. No-one deserved this.

I'm over in Western Australia so a long way away. Very sad to see what happened in Christchurch. There are many kiwis in oz and my neighbour has just flown to Auckland for a wedding.

A lot of the old English buildings that made up ChristChurch will be hauled down now. It's gonna look a very different place in the future, and that's a fact..

The main problem with Christchurch is that it was built on the site of a swampy floodplain. When the 6.3 earthquake struck, the shockwaves were particularly strong as they radiated through the wet gravelly subsoil of the plain--hence the liquifaction, sand- and silt-extrusions, and houses tilting on their foundations or sinking into the soil. When they rebuild Christchurch, it might pay them to shift the city east; rebuild it on Banks Penninsula, which is formed from a pair of old volcanoes, and is therefore solid basalt--a damn sight safer in a tremor. Consider that the Alpine Fault, running along the West Coast of the South Island, hasn't moved since about 1715-20 at the latest. It's been storing up potential kinetic energy at the rate of ca. 35 mm/yr. After 290 years, that mounts up about 9 metres/30 feet. When it does move, we'll be looking at an earthquake of 8+ on the Richter Scale, which will put the 23/2/2011 tremor in the shade.

Actually a thought occurred to me last night...the main problem with the Canterbury Plains, as I mentioned in my previous post but one, is that the entire area is essentially a swamp with gravel on top. The gravel is loosely consolidated, and every time there is an earthquake it compacts a little as the water is forced out from between the stones, and up into the air as silt-fountains. So why not use this water to our advantage--the city could be made safer by cutting into the gravel base and mixing in cement--much like they did when the were building the America's Cup yachting village in Auckland a few years ago. Up here they called it mudcrete--mud mixed with cement to form a hard foundation. There's no reason why this method can't be used down on the Canterbury Plain to harden up the foundations of the new city.

No bodies in the cathedral, apparently, though they were expecting to find 22 dead in there--so I'm not sure whether that lowers the toll of missing by 22, or whether that means those people are dead somewhere else in the city. The Dean of Christchurch was woken at 1 am by one of the emergency people that there were none dead in the cathedral, and he burst into tears of happiness. As you do...
