What do you think of that?:bugeye: It's something that crossed my mind a long time ago about how our cosmos might be just like what you see in a magnified drop of pond water. Then a theoretical physicist on a TV docu said that some of them think we could be living in a computer program (like Matrix I guess). Then more and more over the past few years, and especially these past few months as more and more crazy stuff is happening to the planet, I was thinking that it was all so implausable we may as well be living in a giant SIMS game; remembering the original version when you could opt for more and more natural disasters to challenge the SIMS - so all we need now is a monster like Godzilla and we'll know for sure! LOL! What do you think? I think that life for us on this planet is getting ridiculous with the level of ever-increasingly worse disasters that keep hitting us. All that can come next is a big meteor or a mega volcanic eruption - which I'm sure actually will happen within the next ten years.
if yes... For people who reply "yes"... Who do you think is playing us - some kind of giant child or teenager, or some sinister robot, etc? How do you think the game will end - good for us, bad for us, etc? What happens when the giant SIMS player gets bored and switches the game off? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
probaly sooner than you think with the super moon coming next week their is a good chance of having some volcanic eruptions with the large amounts of siesmic activity that can be caused becuase of the super moon
Not such a modern concept. Mythological Greek and Roman gods were purported to play with humans as pawns. When I was a kid and read Dr. Seuss "Horton Hears a Who", it crossed my mind that we are both larger and smaller universes inside of universes. (ok, a bit different w/Horton,) but the ancient Greeks and Romans had the concept of manipulation of humans by greater beings (as in a game) thousands of years before SIMS.
a super moon is when the moon is a cerian distance away from the earth. i can't explain it well but it is real google it
You mean this: Which has been happening for the entire time we've had the Moon as a satellite. In other words your contention that it's causing "seismic activity" is either nonsense or we've been missing/ ignoring such activity for a very long time. There are, however, a lot of claims that it will happen from "astrologers". I.e. cranks.
We're fortunate in modern society to live in a relatively quiet period of Earth's history. There will be future large scale events that challenge our survival, although most will be more regional than global. We'll either use our brains to adapt either our environment or ourselves, or we'll go the way other species have gone that could not. Ten years...it's possible. But that's also a blink of an eye geologically speaking, so you could be off by a few magnitudes. Our best response is to learn what we can from the world around us, so we can anticipate the events before its too late to do something about them.
If you're a sci-fi fan, UKJoy, watch The Thirteenth Floor. I wouldn't exactly put it up there with the greatest movies of all time, but it will probably blow your hair back a little if you enjoy thinking about this kind of thing.
Seconded. I picked it up cheap on DVD having never heard of it and decided I'd give it a go. Very pleasantly surprised. Well acted and a good premise.
Actually there is a whole bunch of movies that query the boundary. Existanz and Virtual Nightmare are two other ones, there is also others that aren't quite on the subject but have elements, for instance the new film "Sourcecode" covers something that has the boundary queried. This is however a Scifi ideology of the what if's compared to the what about now's. There is an extremely high likelihood that we are actually an Emulation, you'll find subscribers to the reasoning that our reality is a simulation or an emulation are likely to look into Digital Physics which currently is not a doctorate or discipline but an area that gets touched on by many fields. One thing that will "Prove" there is at least a Parallel or Symbiotic usage of an emulated universe is that in all walks of science from time to time raw data is taken and converted into an emulation of an event, an example of this is the results that CERN receives from the LHC are propagated to a number of education and scientific establishments that then sift through that data and potentially emulate or simulate the recorded event. I guess you could query if their emulations aren't in fact a portion to the composite of the actual reality they observe, at least from a causality angle.
I have eXistenZ on DVD as well. Quite a unique movie, with some awesome humour thrown in at the very end. I'd possibly put Dark City in this category as well, although it's probably essentially more of a dark fantasy than a science fiction movie. Never seen Virtual Nightmare. Is it worth the trouble to acquire it?
By the way, Gretchen Mol does nothing but enhance this movie. She's just so adorable, even more so in the US version of Life on Mars (which is itself quite on-topic). And how could we forget Total Recall, which is coming out again next year.
I'm a little confused about where this thread is trying to head, it seems a bit mixed. However, if you are after "Living in a computerized simulation world", there is a "proof" that we are indeed doing so. This has been floating around for a few years and is quite long and convoluted. However, it is very interesting, or at least I found it such. I am sure many of you are familiar with the concept... Or not. Emphasis mine. The full paper is available at the link (http://www.simulation-argument.com/simulation.html)
Dark City isn't quite the same, although it is a good film. I remember Porfiry who use to run/own the forum coming up with some comment about dressing in a long black trenchcoat, with dark glasses and a black hat while creeping up on unsuspecting pedestrians apparently floating using a concealed Sedgeway under the trenchcoat. He imagined it would look rather freaky watching someone float towards them like that. VM was an Australian film it didn't have a high end budget but it's an absolute must as a film at least in this genre. As for Total Recall, Will they keep a women with three breasts? Awesome. (Sorry, paraphrasing quote from "Paul")
to rav Hi Rav... yes I am an SF fan and I've seen this film. I also liked an episode of Outer Limits on a collection I've got of the old B&W series about a man who creates an entire planet in his lab where time runs much faster than ours so he can observe evolution and civilisations, but the 'spirit' of the planet comes out and attacks him. to Randwolf to Randwolf... Thanks so much for your link to the science paper - I'm looking forward to reading that!
to Stryder To Stryder... Thanks for the info about digital physics and the wiki link - this is making me freak out now! I see now that the theoretical physicist I saw on the TV science docu was one of the guys who upholds this idea about us being a digital creation. But who is playing the game, how will it end and what happens if it's switched off??? Thanks all... Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
