It has lead to confusion in the past, in previous threads people spent about 2 pages explaining the word "Create" and in which definition they were using the word, so yes it does lead to confusion sometimes this is exactly why I started this thread to clear up confusions about the different definitions in which the word is used from person to person.

So, how has that worked out for you, so far?

Lots of thankful responses from everyone who was confused, but isn't any more?

It worked out just as I expected it too, people have different definitions of the same word and generally people ascribe the word "Creation" to acts of "Manipulation".

The responses are well appreciated and I thank you all for contributing.

    Peace.

If I can make or produce a chair from wood, then I can create a chair from wood, therefore I have created the chair.

Do you want me to keep listing online dictionaries that state that make is synonymous with create? Or are you willing to cede the point?

Well I woudn't personally use the word "create" when talking about making a product out of already existing materials, but that's just me personally.

I am aware of the Dictionary definitions, this thread was aimed at the way people as individuals use the word which differ from person to person.

I would choose to use the phrase "Put together" a chair, you would choose to say "Create a chair". I guess it's down to linguistic preference.

But that's what the word means - creo (creare, creavi, creatum) - create or manufacture.

    1. I create, manufacture, produce.
    2. I beget, give birth to.
    3. I prepare, cause.
    4. I choose.

Fundamentally, any way you cut it, there is no difference between creating something from nothing, and creating something from some other thing.

My daughter created a work of art for my birthday. The materials she used were pre existing, just as the materials the chair used were pre existing, however, the work of art itself did not.

Then I guess you are less critical when choosing your vocabulary than I am.

    Why?

Because I choose to use a word in the context of creatio ex materia rather than its opposite creatio ex nihilo, or the religous context, creatio ex deo? And in so doing happen to use it in a context that is both correct in the modern world and coherrent with the original meanings of the word?

That's the problem you're facing (or part of it anyway).

Arguably, I'm more critical when choosing my vocabulary than you are, because I've considered all of the original meanings of the word, and decided that my daughters work of art meets the criteria of creatio ex materia. I'm also disabused of the notion that creatio ex nihilo is the only way to go.

I wasn't suggesting your wrong, Im saying there is a difference in the way peope use the word, you agree with me so what are you trying to do here?.

We both agree your trying to create a gap that doesn't exist. what more can I say?

Now you're being confusing - I'll stop short of accusing you of backpeddling.

My whole point, right from the beginning, was that creation by the manipulation of something to make something else is still validly called creation. It's creatio ex materia. Making the chair is creatio ex materia because although the wood existed beforehand, the chair itself did not.

Let me ask you a question - When you, personally, strike a match, do you, personally, view that you have created fire (or created a flame)?
