If one claims to be a Christian, she should not gamble (including Bingo) or listen to soothsayers (tarot, psychics, horoscope, etc.). Why do so many Christians disregard these instructions? Also smoking, gluttony, swearing, premarital sex, and gossiping/judging...?

    Vanja,

Where in the Bible, Old or New Testament, does it prohibit gambling? I'm not saying it doesn't - I just don't recall seeing such a prohibition. Thanks.

Searcher-Jesus was angered by gambling in His Father's house; was insulted by the Roman soldiers' casting lots on/for His garments. The gluttony of the gambling (or whatever else), plus the waste involved are the sins. Seven deadly sins and Jesus' parables to not be lazy as proof.

    Vanja,

I know Jesus was angered by the money changers in the temple. That is different from gambling, though. Money changers had a number of functions, such as: making exchanges between the locally accepted currencies and the other currencies that passed through (these exchanges were sometimes fraudulent); making change for larger denominations for convenience; acting as bankers by holding a client's funds on deposit and returning a fixed rate of interest, which varied greatly from 20-300 percent annually (this was in violation of Mosaic law, by the way). The specialized class of money changers in the temple was necessary since only coins from Tyre were accepted for buying offerings and paying the annual temple tax.

As for casting lots for Jesus' garments, this was prophesized in Psalms 22:18. In both the Old and New Testament times, people often make difficult decisions by casting lots on the ground or drawing them from a container. They believed that the outcome was a reflection of divine will. The lots may have been potsherds, stones, sticks, dice, or other materials. In order to divide the Promised Land among the tribes, God instructed Moses that "the land shall be apportioned by lot; according to the names of their ancestral tribes they shall inherit" (Numbers 26:55). The organization of the temple priests was also determined by lots (1 Chronicles 24:5). And according to 1 Samuel 10:21, lots were used in selecting Saul as the first king of Israel.

I still see no evidence against gambling, if it is done in moderation. Of course, anything done to excess is frowned upon in the Bible. By the way, a glutton is a person who eats to excess - it has nothing to do with gambling.

I read in the Bible that gamling is not prohibited as long as it does not take away from the family's need for things like food, shelter, clothing, health... However, as Tiassa has so eloquently pointed out in a number of posts, we should be able to discern such matters for ourselves. Fortunately though, there is the Bible for those of us who need guidance in these matters.
