The child is a year old. Is that too old? What if she had been nursing a 5 year old?

NORWALK, Ohio— A Huron County woman says she is being harassed for breast-feeding in public.

Chrissy Houtz was nursing her one-year-old son at the Norwalk City Pool last Thursday when several families objected that Houtz was not covering herself up and complained to the management.

"They felt it was disgusting and that they didn't really want to have their children exposed to that," said pool employee Allison Loden.

Houtz said she was then confronted by a supervisor.

"I reminded her of my rights, that under Ohio law, federal law, that my rights and his rights are protected," said Houtz. "We are able to nurse wherever and whenever he wants to."

She faced the same situation a year ago at the pool, and was assured by city officials that her right to breast-feed in public would be respected by employees.

Houtz met Monday morning with Norwalk Law Director Stuart O'Hara, who is now researching legal guidelines on breast-feeding in public places.

This is an outrage!......Doesn't she know that her breasts are there purely for the the enjoyment of men?

Seriously, though, one year old is definitely edging toward the upper register of my weird-o-meter. Five years old is just......wrong.

I figured if I had reproduced I'd just wear a giant t shirt...no bra, and put the baby up my shirt for lunch.
    Hopefully without getting too distracted.

I think there was already a topic about that, or some discussions in the past (as far as I remember).

Should we share our outrage that some woman got 'harassed' for breastfeeding her child in public ? Or ? I can't imagine this happening in Europe, but for it to happen in the USA seems rather plausible to me -- this clinically sterile attitude that's well intermixed with religious ideologies, that's where it's sprawling from. These people feel disturbed at the sight of a mum doing one of the most basic things she could do for her child, but they seem to have no issues sharing the same water with thousands of other people whose cells and other disgusting bodily fluids remain in the waters.
I wonder though, whether it was because they felt disgusted that she'd feed her child with her naturegiven milk producing body parts, or because she exposed her nipples too much under the sun. I wonder. Really.

Edit: Err, also, what is wrong with breastfeeding your child when it is older than 1 year old? What the hell. Instead of feeding it with a baby bottle, they're using their breasts. What exactly is wrong about that? I guess it's less wrong to have a 30 year old lover sucking on those daymn tits, eh?

In public, I would say two years old is the limit. At this age they're eating solids and running around. Mom would have a hard time holding the interest of child long enough to empty. So then what? Just let it hang? The child can go cracker-breast-cracker-play-breast. At that point bottling it is more practical and sanitary. The child still get's the nutrition and it's less socially awkward.
At five years old you're could be tampering with psychological faculties that may have lasting effects..."yo, mom..Boob me!" Ah, no. I don't think so.

    I sort of figured...teeth. Ow.

When the teeth come in, the nerples would have to be protected.

I still don't see what's socially awkward about that if both mother and child are comfortable with it. What exactly makes it socially awkward? Poor men who have to wait more than a year to get the tits back only for them..

Dear God. Breasts are primarily FOR FEEDING CHILDREN. It's our god damned braindead culture that decided breasts were for sexual titillation.

What makes any nudity or natural bodily function socially awkward? I would say it's probably rooted some way in insecurity...Those who are confident in their choices and bodies will always be more willing to push the envelope in this regard. I've read on these pages that the sexual fascination with women's breasts is largely an American trait. IDK what that would be attributed to.

Ermm I breastfed my second until he was around 17-18 months old.

The World Health Organization recommends that all children be exclusively breastfed for six months, then gradually introduced to appropriate family foods after six months while continuing to breastfeed for two years or beyond.

    [Source]

He has never had cows milk - refused to drink it. We tried the toddler formular when he was around 13 months old and he refused to drink it.. the doctor recommended I keep breastfeeding until 18 months and he went straight onto water in a cup. Was the easiest and best thing to do to be honest. No annoying bottles and teats to wash and made travel a dream.

I do not understand how or why people find it offensive. It shows a complete lack of education and understanding of child care and health.

You always post things that I never get to see. Perhaps you could send a few of these women here and let me judge whether or not they are unsettling.

"Ample bosoms" are the most obvious indication of a woman's reproductive status, and so men are naturally attracted to breasts and the women who have them. Reproductive status is the second most important purpose of breasts following their primary use to nourish children. Obviously, without their primary purpose, there would be no secondary purpose.

I've heard this often posited at other times and places. However...
    • To begin with, there's the 25,000 year old, über-busty Venus of Willendorf stone fertility figurine.
    • In the 3,000+ year old Epic of Gilgamesh, a woman flashed her breasts at the wild Enkidu in order to capture him.
    • Unlike any American newspaper I know of, the British newspaper The Sun has published its breasts-exposed Page 3 young women beginning in 1970.
    • But yes, America does have its McDonald's golden arches.
    • And Americans were largely responsible for the invention and development (no pun intended) of breast implants.

Since the human female trait of Breasts, regardless of pregnancy status, being engorged all year round was an evolutionary trait developed in Africa...it's their fault!

We are merely carrying on the tradition...all over the world.

I just don't understand what the issue is.

    They're breasts.

They also provide essential nourishment for one's baby.

People complaining that their children are exposed to it.. Err.. have they not explained to their children what the woman is doing? Have their children never seen them naked or seen breasts before?

Their children haven't been exposed to anything.

Maybe it is a North American culture thing. Here in Australia, where I live at any rate, it is almost strange to see a woman not breastfeeding at times, especially in the last few years. I remember getting dirty looks and comments when I breastfed my newborn, half the time with a wrap covering myself, but I notice now that women get less of that and it isn't unexpected to see a woman in the shopping centre breastfeed as she eats lunch for example, or at the beach. And they do not get harassed by people who feel they should be offended.

One of the things I had noticed was that it was mostly women who used to be offended. As though they viewed it as a form of sexual flaunting. Which frankly, how one can view it that way is beyond me.

Perhaps those who thought that way were "small tited" women with small minds as well?

That's stupid and overtly sexist. She should sue the lot of 'em.

I always found it to be big breasted women with small brains. The results are inconclusive so far. I'll have to do more intensive research on the matter and get back to you.

You're both wrong. It's nipple size that's the proper correlate of female intelligence.
