be sure to inform him that "our enemy" also include:
french, british, jamaican, indians, russians, japanese, africans, americans, australians, and europeans. terrorists are a non national lot.

The actual wasting of Osama and the direct attacks on the rest of the organization is a good thing unless you have some strange sympathy for terrorist groups that would have you killed. You're Canadian right? You have troops, no matter how few engaged, that makes you and your own targets to those who are fighting what amounts to an ideological war. Now its well established here on sciforums that I am thoroughly against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and even Libya, but I am not against special operations that target terrorist cells. I think we should have gone all Mossad on them, do it covertly, using special foreces and intel agencies and not waging these whole scale wars on nations and it civilians, it only creates insurgency and produces more problems as one becomes intrenched in an intractable war.

Now ain't that the truth. That's the problem with terrorist cells, they don't need to operate out of any particular country to do what they do. They're fluid, they move, they can recruit from anywhere.

my perspective is fine because it's correct. yours is weak considering you claim to have been around military all your life which indicates to me that either you have only talked with certain types of military personnel or associate with those who tell you what you want to hear. if you would get beyond your myopic perspective, you would know there are plenty of vets who have experienced war and have become bitter and not value life anymore than others. there are those who hold grudges or bigotry against other countries because their comrade/comrades were killed. some people don't learn the same things from the same experience. there will be soldiers who have experienced and seen war who afterwards become much more philosophical or understand that it's a travesty against life itself and there are those who don't learn that at all but believe their team was right and the other was the enemy and don't consider the wider implications or look any deeper.

as for this last bit: MAKES ONE MUCH MORE CLOSELY LINKED TO LIFE, DEATH AND VIOLENCE DUE TO WAR!

let me make it clear: IT'S NOT THE SAME AS 'VALUING LIFE' AS YOU STATED! IF YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE A POINT, THEN MAKE IT CORRECTLY! WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT IS CALLED 'PTSD', GENIUS!

besides the fact, sometimes just the opposite happens and those who have seen atrocious things end up valuing life less or become desensitized.

Ok I agree with most of that, so I'm bowing out. Even the common soldier should know who exactly is the enemy (if at all possible - not group all Arabs) and be as respectful of their capabilities as possible. For their own skin.

Fantasist. You have a lot to learn about argument because declaring yourself 'correct' doesn't make it so nor does it convince. Like I asked before what informs your opinions. At least Orleander gave reason for why she felt the way she did. You just offer your off-the-cuff opinion without reason or knowledge. I don't presume to know anything about you so I ask, I'm not the one to have to 'hang around' personnel. I have had my own life, my own experience and I am proudly married to a man who serves. Now stop pussy footing around and tell me what gives you the brass to offer the opinion you hold. Anything?

And many of them do, its fucked up for them because they know the reality on the ground and they also know how they're presence and tactics make things worse. That's the worst for their state of mind. And it may interest you to know that I have met few who went to Afghanistan who didn't learn to respect the locals, as well as being completely dismayed by them. I have yet to meet anyone outside of de-miners who felt they were doing any good by their presence in either Afghanistan or Iraq. NOT ONE! De-miners are special because they know they are clearing the way so average civilians can live their lives without losing limbs, but that's a very different task.

what gives me the brass??? lmfao.

i'll tell you straight. i have brains and because you lack brains, living and breathing around military has not helped your perspective. how could it? you don't have brains to process info correctly. you have a totally biased perspective where you view military in a positive and knight in shining armor fashion and are very sympathetic to them. the last few posts have made it kind of clear why you tend to have this bias as, like you said, your husband serves as well as your life has revolved around the military. basically you have a gung-ho view of the military. ironicly, it's you who are the 'fantasist' which you projected onto me. how quaint.

No experience, never served, no substantial counter-argument only couch bred delusions of knowledge, don't know anything about it. You're dismissed.

You must be of the bloodline of the great Holmes, by the nine gods and timber wolves.

Also, if you child wanted the same thing as OPs child what your reaction would be?

I would test them to see if they had the mettle and test their desire and after giving them every reason not to do it and all the information available of what the life is and what the risks are, if they chose to pursue anyway I would support them and guide them towards the best possible career and be proud. I would be a proud mama! I would want them to go as far as possible in military expertise...yes...even if it meant Delta.
